I am looking at to put a antenna up on the house for my scanner but I am not allowed to mount anything on the roof. I thought about a lip mount on the outside of the house, but I can not drill any holes through the walls and they will see it mounted to the out side of the house and complain.

Is there anyone that makes a good "on the glass antenna"? I had one from Radio Shack years ago and it worked great. My idea was since I can't mount anything to the roof, to buy one of theses and mount it to the window. This way I have and "outside antenna" in a sense. It would be harder to see from the road than one mounted to the house of roof line. I know the glass mounts are probaly not that great but it should be better than the stock antenna on the scanner inside the house. Any input or suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

At my computer, duh!
Check out the ARRL handbook. One possible solution better than a through the glass mount is a block installed in the window. You can drill your holes in that, close the window on it, and then block the window from above if the window is a security problem. Run the cable through the block in a pipe, turned down on the outside to prevent water from getting in (turned up on the inside is just another 20 cent elbow and helps too.) Plug it with foam or RTV and you're set.

I think you will find the window in our house is a little too think for a glass mount antenna to work properly. These things are designed to work on a single glass pane that is like 1/4" thick.

Now that you mention that, you are right. There are 2 pieces of glass with a ~ 1/4" void between them.

Also the window slides open from right to left. I guess I am going to have to look around and see what i can come up with.

Thanks.

What bands do you want to listen to?

How strong or weak is the signal?

Seems you are chasing "Better", with out a measuring stick.

Do you have an attic? That's usually the best option for an antenna if you can't mast mount one on the roof. As long as the attic doesn't have foil backed insulation and the roofing material is something like composition shingle, an attic antenna will be a great improvement over a scanner mounted antenna.

95% 800 MHz 4% UHF 300-500 the rest NOAA weather.

The roof is adobe stuff. That clay they use for roofs in the desert. I do not have and attic that I can get to. It is on the out side of the house, the entrance to it.

The systems have towers all over the area.
