I'm selling my 2 scanners and R20 down at the local pawn shop and buying one of those blueberry cells at walmart. Think of all the money I will be making ! Plus I can now listen to my local feeds in my pick up without breaking the law, scanners are illegal in vehicles unless you meet certain exceptions. I can even take pictures and film the action. I can call everyone and tell them about the car accident, fire ,robbery, wife beater, child molester, drug dealers, gang bangers, and all kinds of stuff. It will even fit in my shirt pocket for easy concealment, no one will even know, think of all the options also. If you can't beat em, join em.

I agree. The scanner apps are killing the hobby. And it's so ironic that we, the scanning community who really enjoy listening and take the time and spend the money to buy equipment, are the very ones providing the feeds and hurting the hobby.

Feeds should be taken down or privatized so that only those that we know or trust have access to them. That would deflate the radio salesmen's encryption pitch to public safety agencies

If we all go back the humble roots of this hobby (which for me seems eon's ago) the central theme was for LE and citizens to cooperate together. Once LE knew someone was watching their every move they tended to be more discretionary with their activities. Scanner owners knew discretion was key to helping LE do their jobs.

For me this argument is simple. I've spent alot of time, money, effort and pain over the years struggling through the changes LE has made to their systems to keep stuff like "smart phone" or "everybody knows" out of the loop. They cannot do their jobs effectively with this kind of public access.

There is an elite group of us who have dedicated our lives to the hobby of scanning. We scan for public service broadcasts, weather, taxi cabs, police and trains. True enthusiasts spend countless hours and boatloads of money to keep up with changing radio systems. We gladly share our knowledge with others who know our passion. We also know when to keep information to ourselves in the best interest of everyone.

I have a smart phone and have tried several apps to beat the encryption game. No longer will one scanner mounted on the dashboard do the job. I now have two scanners mounted to the dashboard connected to a netbook computer running UniTrunker along with a myriad of other handheld scanners doing different things and I've had to take trains out of the loop. Just too much information!

My 2 cents for what it's worth! Cut the smart phone apps! Scanning should be left to a professional just like catching bad guys should be left to the professionals!

RadioReference is one of the most professional and self policing groups I've ever been affiliated with. The members here are wonderful and knowledgeable. So when they start to call for shutting down smartphone apps and general access we should listen to them!

Has anyone discussed the issue that scanner apps may be a violation of the Communications Act?
