For your own sanity, Forget it as far as monitoring the Prince Albert Police. Even if you could manage to find a radio, you would never find someone to program it for you. It would cost you a fortune to pursue this dream. No sarcasim meant. :)

Write them off and just listen to Fire, Ambulance and whatever else you can. :)

Mark, you would need the radio that is compatible (and all the accessories like batteries, chargers, antenna etc), a programming cable and radio interface box, a version of EDACS ProGrammer that supports the MRK (this is your biggest hurdle), and all the data correctly organized to then put into ProGrammer and send it to the radio.
I know I have done a cost/benefit examination of doing a similar project, and as long as you don't mind spending about $2,000 in total to listen to ONE AGENCY, go for it.

As for ProGrammer, that is where the biggest hurdle is. You could probably get the radio and accessories, the programming cable and RIB on Ebay for under US$500-600, but finding either someone WILLING to sell you ProGrammer, or that has ProGrammer and is willing to program the radio for you is very very hard. The program itself sells for around US$1500-2000, and is ONLY SOLD TO AUTHORIZED AGENCIES AND DEALERS. They do not sell it to individuals.

Mark:

Don't be scared off by the "unknown". Just research the system first, before investing money. That's what I did back in 2002 when I purchased an ASTRO Saber to monitor the RCMP in Manitoba; this is before digital scanners were out.

Know the hardware and its capabilities, limitations, and whether or not the system is encrypted. If indeed the comms are encrypted, you can't listen. You won't be able to "guess the key" either. It doesn't work like that.

If you have the cash to play with, go for it. If I lived where you are, I'd be listening to that system within 3 weeks, provided it's not encrypted.

Oh, and the most important thing:

DO NOT take your portable out and about with you, and brag to media/others than you can listen. These scummy people will rat you out and the next thing you know, you'll get a visit from the police because they have nothing better to do. Been there, done that.

Also please bear in mind that the Fleetnet system will be turned down soon. I don't have an exact date, but it won't be too long. Do you want to spend, say $2000, or whatever amount, to listen, and then have Fleetnet shut down shortly, perhaps as soon as a few months, after you start listening?

Fleetnet ain't going anywhere soon, Sasktel can't make something out of nothing...they have no replacement, plus its not going anywhere, its just not being supported. Sasktel says December 1st 2006 -- yeah right... December 1st 2010 sounds more reasonable ;)

Did you ever find out for sure if they are encrypted? Last I heard you knew they were digital, but did not know if they were encrypted.

Well theres a guy here in P.A. that has a digital scanner and he can't pick them up. They are on FleetNet and digital so that means they are using AEGIS.

A digital scanner wouldn't pick them up using AEGIS though would it? So how do you know it is encrypted? AEGIS isn't encryption...

AEGIS isn't encryption?? or is it just a type of digital like apco-25 but not supported by any scanner manufacturer.

Maybe if you can, ask the person with a digital scaner to program in P.A. frequencies in as conventional frequencies and see if he picks anything up that way when a digital transmission comes up.

This will do nothing for you .. this is AEGIS, and not Apco 25 as the scanner would be able to pick up.

The infomation above in this post is all the information you need to get started. If it is encrypted .. then sell the radio and move on.

This is what you should do ..

Purchase radio .. MRK etc to pick up AEGIS. (Check out the MACOM forum here to see the feature code you need for AEGIS .. I dont remember it). I would look on Ebay as there are lots of these older radios around. Make sure the radio has the feature code needed for AEGIS.

Get the information needed on the system ... via RR Database or Etrunker til you know all the info needed to program the system. Frequencies etc ..

Send the radio and 25$ to the vendor on Ebay (Price Industries) to get it programmed for receive only ... I would do this fast as I personally am very surprised the police havent ended this practice.

If it works .. great. If the system is encrypted .. all you need to do is sell the radio on Ebay etc. (Etrunker wont tell you if it is encrypted and I dont have AEGIS here but I dont think you can tell from listening to the frequency conventionally to see if it is or not) You are out 25$ for the programming ....

Done .. the only thing, they make a change you need to send the radio back to be reprogrammed.

As far as more posts about this .... I personally am getting tired of the posts on the same thing over and over again. We on this forum have told you many times what you need to do .. listen what has been written already and proceed.
