Does anyone know if the xts 5000 can be used as a scanner?

Yes, and mostly no. If you are not an authorized user on the system it is difficult and you risk your radio being turned into a doorstop. Plus it only scans like 10-15 channels.

Buy a scanner, cheaper, easier to program, and scans more channels.

I have the pro96 scanner and I also have a motorola stx 821 I like the stx better than I do my radio shack pro96 I've carried my stx so long I forgot it was just a scanner and now the IMPD has switch over to to new xts5000 I was just wondering if I could enjoy my hobby with the xts5000 and move on with my life?

No! Do a search on RR or Google XTS5000 and scanner. You'll get your answer.

maybe im dense or i missed it, but if your not a user on the system, and you set your radio to monitor their channels.. how would that make your xts a door stop? ive heard many people set up 800mhz radios to scan, but not able to transmit due to them not being a user on the system.

Because they can monitor each and every radio on the system and which site the radio is connecting to as you travel around. So if you live in Northern Marion County, but you radio is affiliated to a South group, it sticks out. Duplicate id’s stick out. Radios turned on at odd hours stick out. And when the radio comes on that is not authorized, the administrators can “brick” or disable the radio. The only way it can be repaired is by sending it to Motorola Depot, and you’ll have to explain why you need it repaired.

The XTS500 auto-affiliates with the 96k radio system. You can’t disable that feature like you can on older systems and radios.

But if money is not object, I say go for it. Just don’t expect good results. But I think you’ll find the administrators quite competent in doing their job. And after they contact the legitimate user, your radio will be a nice doorstop.

does anyone have the tg id's for Ops 21, 22, 23? They aren't in the database for some reason and they are still in use.

I think that is because some fire guy with IFD posted or sumited a new list witch was wrong info and then they changed the DB going by his list that was wrong but oh well
I know Hamilton County use the ops 21,22,23 a lot patched to IFD when they help IFD
