I got because it was cheap and covered the 800 mhz band, hoping to hack it for discriminator out. I'll probably never get around to it, but in the meantime it's my house scanner. It's quite a bit dumber than the BCT-8, but a lot cheaper. No "banks" (at least in the sense that you can turn off), no direct number input (ie, you have to either find it or scroll till you get there), no RS-232 out.
On the plus side, I think I paid about $80 for mine, it's small, and seems to have as good RF performance as the BCT-8. If you need those other features but don't need trunking, get the BCT-7. Or better yet, get the 8 anyway for the price difference. If you are actually _scanning_ for stuff. It might be ok. If you want a small cheap scanner to get a few services that you know about in advance - it'll work well for that too. If you have a ton of different things you want to track, get a 7 or 8 for the organizational capabilities.
