OPP aircraft patrols Thanksgiving weekend

TORONTO -- The O-P-P will have eyes in the sky and on the
highways for the Thanksgiving weekend.
It's the first time in nearly 25 years that police will have a
plane helping patrol the roads.
O-P-P Sergeant Cam Woolley says the plane will help catch the
drivers who only slow down when they see a cruiser.
He says by the time the aggressive drivers see the police car it
will be too late.
The air patrols were cut in 1981 to save money but the force is
considering whether to bring them back.
Police from coast to coast will be monitoring highways in a
program they call "Operation Impact."
The O-P-P will also have Ministry of Transport inspectors out
checking vehicle equipment.

I assume that this plane will be using Sim11 to stay in contact with the comm centre...same sort of setup as the chopper when it is in use.

I'd have a listen to the highway ranger talk group as well. The fleetnet radios do seem to work from above, I'd guess better at lower than at higher altitudes.
Saw Cam this morning saying that civilian pilot will be having one of the rangers riding shotgun.
Also said they're using the air support this weekend more for the really extreme drivers--As in 160+km/h and the lane bouncers.
The stats should be interesting by Tuesday morning.

Not many spots around (other than select target zones in York Region) that have pavement markings for speed timing.

Very slim chance they will use Fleetnet due to interference issues with other sites.

I'd check Sim 1 and Sim 11 and the uhf frequencies assigned to the OPP.

What frequencies would the Ottawa Police air unit use? Would they be on the EDACS System or would they be using simplex frequencies?

I haven't heard anything on Sim11.

I have heard Ottawa Police Air Traffic on 142.770 the OPC common channel, this was for a vehicle on hwy 417. This was O.P.P. communicating with Ottawa Regional City Police. Other than that haven't heard them on anything else. Ottawa Police use Pro-voice EDACS, so they are unable to be heard.

Is SIM 1 still 140.970mhz? I think I actually forgot to program that one in.
