As I'm driving through the Ont countryside, I want to be able to keep track of traffic snarlups and emergency situations, such as car crashes. Can I monitor OPP frequencies to do this ... or are they encrypted? Thx for reading.
Mobile scanners are legal in Ontario. You will need a digital capable scanner. Currently most frequencies are not encrypted. Some are. But, this system is being phased out. So if OPP is all you are interested in, you will be wasting your money.
I bought a Motorola XTS 2500 for $200. It has P25 and will pick up Barrie Police and Fire, OPP Zone 1, MOH ,and Base Borden Military Police, and local repeaters for Ham radio.
Which parts of Ontario are you planning to drive through? The provincial police on the highways are on FleetNet - which is divided into 4 zones.
You could always just program all the zones and their sites with OPP talkgroups, and do a site hold when it latches onto one, until it loses reception and you move to the next one. Or plot out the route ahead of time with just the sites you'll be passing by.
As mentioned, yes you can currently listen to OPP. However they will be moving to a new system much sooner than later that will be fully encrypted, so the time left to listen is growing shorter by the day.
I heard them talking the other day on a tac channel apparently by the end of Jan. I heard them doing radio checks at 230 am on new installs the other day
Yes you can monitor the OPP. If you have a 436 (or HomePatrol type unit: HP1 SDS100, etc) you can even hook up a GPS to it and it will turn on/off local systems sites as you travel.
