Hey Y'all,

Anybody have any thoughts on the many "near field" frequency finders that "Opto" has produced??

Seem like the recent handheld scanners are adopting some of the "Scout" features.

I have had the Opoelectronics Scout 40 for over a year and I think it's one of the best tools I have baught to help me find frequencies, I just walk into a Casino or a mall and within minutes I capture the frequencies I am looking for. I take it with me when I go for a walk or go for a bike ride and when I get home I put the frequencies into my scanner. I will be buying one of the new digital scanners If they have a built in counter, I have a bc250d digital scanner and wish it had the built in frequency counter.

Steve,

Thanks for the response.

There are just too many neat "toys" out there right now for my budget! I have totally ignored the trunked system scanners because I knew the digital era would be here soon - now I need a P-2096 to catch up. Is there going to be a digital Opto Scout?

Regards, JB

There already is a Digital Scout.

I've had the Scout 40 for many years, and it is great, but the new scanners just make it obsolete. Not only do they do all it does (not sure if the PRO-83 will store captures, though), but they also let you hear the signal AND will decode and CTCSS/CDCSS used. They are very close to emulating the Xplorer, but with the speed of the Scout.

As for the cost, pick up a PRO-83 the day after Turkey Day on sale for $55 :!:

Hi Joe and Steve,

Thanks for the response.

Well, I am glad that I am reading it correctly - the P-83 really does have some of the Opto Scout capability. As you mention, at the price of $55, it cannot be ignored (i.e., I WILL have one after Turkeyday). I suspect I will find an IOU (Radio Shack gift certificate) for the P-2096 under the Christmas tree this year (very understanding wife).

I would like to have a (relatively) low cost SSB receiver that I could devote to the 20 to 26.5 MHz range also. There is a lot of interesting USB - LSB activity there (even some interesting AM activity) that I listen to on my Kenwood (e.g., there is a USB "buddies net" at 26.400 MHz that is located on Cape Bretton Island (and even some interesting activity from the nearby French Islands, albeit I do not understand French YET). I guess it is a rather taboo topic for Hams, but I do like to listen to the International "Freeband" activity. The Kenwood has too many other things to do, so another radio would be nice. Maybe I can pick up a used gerneral coverage RX to do that. I GOTTA learn how to use ebay.com! Maybe I can find and Opto Scout there on the cheap if the new scanners are undercutting the Opto market.

So much to listen to and so little time!!

Regards, John.

re-frequency counters

:)
Also guys don't forget the new Uniden 246t scanner they just came out with that has a counter inside it they call it Close Call ™ RF Capture Technology looks like a nice scanner if you don't need digital or want to listen to aircraft in the 225.000 mhz band.
