Commissioners approve purchase of radios

Orange County commissioners on Monday approved the use of about $185,000 in grant funds to purchase new radios for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

The grant will cover the purchase of 50 Motorola digital radios — 20 car radios and 30 portable radios for officers. Merritt said the older radios would remain in service until other county agencies had the new digital radios, as the analog and digital radios were incompatible. Merritt said the radios used less bandwidth, which allows more radios to be used, and that the transmissions would be better controlled.

The radios would likely be in the county’s possession this year.

Huh? What radios are they buying that are incompatible with analog?

That's what I wondered. And how does "less bandwidth" allow "more radios to be used?" Maybe more radios secondary to the fact that more frequencies are licensed...

Exactly my thoughts. You can't expect the media to impress us with their knowledge of wireless communications on this board.
