I have a new Uniden BCD996P2 and trying to listen to Orange County NY - I am in Western Orange Co. on the PA/NY border. Using FreeScan, I added the system. The problem is the North Simulcast is garbled and inconsistent. I have adjusted the Threshold up and down and have not found it helps. Any advice to fine tune this. Everything else works fine.

See the numerous posts on this and other Forums about the fact the BDC996P2, and most other scanners, can not reliably receiver P25 Simulcast systems such as Orange County. Limited reception may be possible depending on your location.

Only Uniden SDS100/200 and Unication scanners are designed for proper simulcast reception.

Thanks for the reply, I guess I have another conventional scanner. Hearing Whisler may be coming back. Does the TRX-2 receive simulcast?

No! Currently, the only scanners designed to receive simulcast sites are the Uniden SDS100 and SDS200. Try turning on the attenuator, changing the length and orientation of the antenna, and moving the scanner around the room.

Actually, any of those scanners can receive simulcast. The issue is compensating for the mutual interference between multiple transmit sites being received at the same location. For some locations, it is possible to reduce the distortion by aiming a directional antenna at the strongest site. In other locations, there might not be enough signal from other sites to cause a problem.

Only the Uniden SDS series and the Unication pagers have built-in capability for dealing with simulcast automatically.

It all depends upon your location in relation to the towers. Garbled audio and missed transmissions are typical symptoms of simulcast distortion. You can try my suggestions to see if you can get it to work. Changing the orientation of the antenna will change your receiving direction. That is similar to using a directional antenna without the additional expense. The Uniden SDS scanners were specifically designed to overcome the effects of simulcast distortion experienced by all of the older scanners. The Uniden SDS100/200 scanners and Unication G4/G5 pagers are both excellent with simulcast sites. However, the Uniden scanners are much more versatile. The pagers can receive only one system and one site at a time and cannot mix conventional frequencies and trunked systems. They are not capable of receiving the Motorola Type II SmartNet system used by the Federal Correctional Institution at Otisville. The G5 receives VHF/700/800 only or UHF/700/800 only depending upon the model. The G4 receives 700/800 only.

Try using just the south simulcast site only .
See if that makes any difference .
