I'll be attending Air Venture next week and want to monitor some public safety systems in the Oshkosh area. I plan to bring along either a 436 or a HP-2. Any suggestions? I don't need the airshow freqs :)

Thanks!

Check the data base section on this site.

Thank you, that's obviously the first step and I've already done that. Perhaps I need to clarify:

What systems are specific to the Oshkosh area, particularly those that would not be apparent to a non-resident? If based in UWOshkosh (and not driving around,) what systems / freqs could I reasonably expect to monitor from there? Are there any issues with them that I need to be aware? Which systems are busy, and which are not so much? Any specific TGs / freqs that should be monitored or avoided? I've only a few days in the area, and I'm looking for helpful tips / suggestions from experienced listeners.

Thanks again.

For public safety around the EAA Airventure, you will want to scan the Outagamie/Winnebago County P25 system.

Outagamie/Winnebago County Public Safety System Trunking System, Varies, Wisconsin - Scanner Frequencies

The City of Oshkosh and most other local agencies are on the system. Some of the Special Events TGs are used at the airshow.

Be aware the system is a P25 simulcast system which can be tricky to scan, however your 436 should do well!

Thanks for the info. Browsing through Wisconsin threads, it seems like the WISCOM system is lightly used statewide - is it active in the Oshkosh area, and is it worthwhile to scan?

WISCOM is active statewide. You will hear some local/county traffic that is gatewayed in. The City of Fond du Lac to the south is a full time user. There is always the potential to hear various state and federal agencies, and other misc. users like transit and air medical. EAA may bring some of that traffic to the sites in the Oshkosh area.

Thanks for the inco. Can you tell me what simulcast cells / sites to enable on Wiscom for the Oshkosh area? I won't need to scan all of them, and its more efficent not to enable those that cannot be received. Thanks again!

Very little simulcast used on WISCOM, and none in the Oshkosh area. You'll have to enter in each site separately.

Here's a map: http://interop.wi.gov/docview.asp?docid=25771&locid=166

Depending on your receiver and antenna, you should probably get Fond Du Lac, Chilton and Berlin.

My suggestion would be to not program any TGs - rather, do an open scan for TGs (wildcard, whatever your scanner supports). Other than Fond Du Lac and "scan" groups, you are likely to hear not much of anything, so spending time on programming TGs very likely to be time not well spent. Don't get mislead by all of the very juicy sounding TGs in the RRDB, while I'm sure they're correct, most are simply not used.

I just wanted to thank those who provided info on Oshkosh area radio systems. I was able to successfully receive the Outgamie/Winnebago County TRS, and a few hits on the WISCOM system (a TG in the 61xxx range.)
