To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I currently own a xts3000 flashed for APCO-25/Conventional systems on the 403-470MHz split. My question is I have a chance to get a xts2500, also APCO-25 with the front programmable option included.

My questions are (If you have used both or own a 2500):

1. From a quality issue which is a better radio? I know my 3000 is USA made and the 2500 is made in Malaysia.

2. How is the TX audio on these. My xts3000 has just great TX audio on the HAM and P25 repeaters.

3. My 3000 has all Motorola tags, i.e. serial number, model etc and the 2500 does not but it is a legit radio that is not hot, parts radio, or whored flash/DSP/firmware. Would this alone make you keep the 3000?

So? Is the XTS2500 a good radio?

Here is another what if.........
Would you rather a XTS2500 (APCO-25) with FPP or a XTS5000 (APCO-25) without FPP?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

I have owned both a VHF and UHF XTS3000. The VHF was a model II, the UHF a model III. Super radios; I enjoyed them very much. Both were sold to make way for two XTS2500I's, both FPP, VHF and UHF, both bought from Panter88 on eBay, which is who I suspect you're looking at.

We use XTS2500I's at work (700/800 MHz models) so I had a head start with them. I find their quality to be every bit as solid as the XTS3K's were. I have had super audio reports while transmitting with both an external mic and the internal. They're smaller and they're a current model. I also have the advantage of having the CPS available to me as I program our radios as well.

I had two fantastic transactions with Panter. He communicated with me, answered questions, and the radios arrived here fast; the first one week after purchase, the second 5 days. Both work fine in both analog and P25, and the front panel programming could not be easier. It's such a great feature to have with such excellent quality radios. It's my understanding that Panter purchases these "not quite up to passing quality control" radios from Motorola in bulk, and then sells them on eBay for by comparison very inexpensive prices. While I would probably not use one as a front line public safety radio, both of mine work superbly for amateur radio use and for monitoring.

Panter88 also has very favorable comments overall at the Batlabs message board, www.batlabs.com . Deal with confidence. Honestly, I'll take the 2500 FPP's over a 5000 any day for my use.

2500s aren't bad, but I'd prefer a 5000 my self. The 2500 uses the same processor (Patriot IC), so if they both have the same flash, they're going to do the same thing. I just prefer the form factor of the 5k, after having owned many of both.

Think of the XTS2500 as a "mini-me" of the XTS5000 - it basically is, software wise.

Thanks both for the reply.
Yes I am looking at a Panter88 xts2500. This would be used for Amateur use only. I do like the form factor of the 3000/5000. So what you are saying is that the 2500 FPP with Host/DSP of R12.00 would be "better" than a non FPP 5000 with a Host/DSP of lower version?

The XTS3000 is basically an Astro Saber in a "nicer" case (if that's what you prefer..) and a couple more features.

I'd go with the 2500, personally. Better audio quality and you can get a more up-to-date Host/DSP in the radio; current is R12.x for the Astro25 line, and the Astro line stopped at R08.08.05.

Thanks guys.....

I think I will wind up going the XTS5000 route. Because I have stuff from the XTS3000 I can still use. Also I am not real keen on the idea that you can not change the power output on the fly.

Thanks again to all.
