I was using Spectrum Sweeper on my TRX-1 and found some action on 141.405 here in Ottawa. It seemed to be two different things going on, and I wonder what it's all about
First, there were rather a lot of short transmissions in FM mode. A lot of them were too short to make much out of ("10-4" doesn't tell you much!) But listening for awhile and hearing more of the content of what was being said, it was obviously paramedics being dispatched: e.g. "Code 3 Allergic Reaction at (location)..." and "Medic ### call Ottawa", etc. The FM volume is relatively low (not inaudible, though, except in a couple of case), there is a rather high amount of static in the background, the transmissions seem slightly cut off for the first syllable or so. Doesn't help that paramedics all seem to speak really fast!
Second, as well as the FM signals, 141.405 also very occasionally came up as "NAC 2F2 TG: 8800". Those transmissions came in significantly louder and clearer than the FM transmissions.
On the RadioReference database, 141.405 is one of the frequencies for the Bell FleetNet Ontario Provincial Government Zone 2, at the Ottawa (CARSL) site. There are Ottawa (and other) hospitals listed with various other talkgroup numbers, but not talkgroup 8800 that showed up on the screen of my scanner; that one is listed as an OPP talkgroup in the database. The relatively rarer contents of the talkgroup conversations was about an accident blocking an offramp on the Queensway (Highway 417)--not necessarily NOT paramedics, but it could be OPP chatter as well.
So, like, what's with this?
I know a trunked system can end up directing transmissions from different sources to the same frequency, but can a frequency assigned to a trunked system's talkgroup ALSO be used by conventional frequencies? Note that no talkgroup number came on the screen when the FM mode paramedic transmissions were taking place.
For what it's worth, a TAFL search for frequency 141.405 shows all Ontario Provincial, mostly aircraft and one listing for MNR contractors, but also these, dating to 2020, which could be anything really:
