On a side note...

Does anyone remember when OPS was on 142.095, 142.845, .725, .995 etc...or the Simplex on 139.685? "Car 2", then Car "204", then 1204 and now 15/17xx for the west end...

Nepean on 142.335?
Gloucester on 142.uh oh..

Or maybe OFS on 154.37 (154.835)?

I can't remember what I had for breakfast, but frequencies...that's another thing.

The good old days when you had to buy xtals for each frequency.

In the 1970's OPD switched from 155MHz to 142 MHz -> 142.095/.485/.725/.995/.245 and 139.680 simplex. Old Ch. 1 was 155.400 out, 155.940 in, never found out what Ch. 2 (West end) was, but it was nearby. Ch. 1 repeater continued operation for a while, used by Parking Control.

Ottawa Fire was originally on 154.370 simplex and 159.390 for station calls. Later, 154.830 was added, and station call went to split operation on 159.390/155.550. Vehicle repeaters were first in-band (154.370/154.830 to 155.550), then on UHF, 415.2375 I think.

Not sure who else remembers, Ottawa PD and others around (Nepean, Gloucester) used OPC Common 139.770. Each had these little voice identifiers, sounded as bad or worse as Speak'n'Spell, saying "Ottawa Police, common channel" etc.periodically. Pronunciation of "Gloucester" was especially bad. Cross between funny and annoying.

Why was 142 mhz output a common police frequency assigned by department of communications back then?

Industry Canada had set the 142 segment aside for Law enforcement.

Although 142MHz not exclusively for law enforcement. Even at the time, the sub-band had (and still has) Hydro-Quebec. In the rest of the 138-144 band, in this area:

-federal gov't departments (External Affairs, National Museums etc.)
-provincial gov't e.g. MTO, and lots in Quebec.
-commercial paging, and other commercial operations (relatively low usage).

School buses and public works used that band in my area as well.

I'm sure Industry Canada probably favoured that band for interop purposes since most rigs were crystal based and had a limited frequency range but I don't think they specifically set it aside.
