Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I don't see on M's website any kind of close range repeater. Is there a solution to talk while your outside but close to the vehicle? Or do I have to buy a portable, and then buy a repeater, so i have the same powe r as my mobile?

Hey one of my buddies on the patrol division is the only one that has that model in the car. Well ill add in my 2 cents, if your wanting to talk outside of your car, best to just get a portable but if you have your own repeater system then you can have it all programmed to the same freqs and codeplug that way your repeater is at one location "home or wherever" and you can have your portable and mobile in the car but once your out you can talk through your portable and it would hit the repeater.. and your mobile would pick it all up vice versa if you use your mobile... hope that makes sense to you

Then I guess theres no cheap and easy solution. Why even bother with a mobile, if your going to get a portable and a repeater?

Do a search for Motorola VRS750.

You should find enough information on what you need to get up and running with a mobile extender/VRS

The VRS750 should fit the bill when connected to the "legacy" 25 pin connector on the remote radio chassis.

It is a simple repeater that crossbands whatever band the XTL is to UHF or VHF, depending on the model you buy, they are programmable from either 136-174 or 403-470. There may be a 450-512 model too. They use the HT750 radio platform internally. It can be programmed for 275Mw or 2 watts output.

I have one for my Astro Spectra plus and am very pleased with it.

People like to use VRS units, or mobile extenders, when a portable radio won't make it to the repeater or system, but the higher power mobile will. Also vice-versa with RX.

For instance, MARCS in ohio is 800Mhz, but portable coverage is limited as it was designed for mobile coverage.

So, VRS type units (on 700Mhz) are in use. Of course, in this way the same radio can be used both on and off the system, but it will allow the user to be able to access the system with the HT when the HT could otherwise not get in on its own by using the higher power mobile.

I found the spec sheet for the vrs750.
http://www.motorola.com/governmenta...Files/ProductInformation/VRS750_specsheet.pdf

Seems kinda out dated, like they should be coming out with a new version. I guess my next question would be...So with this solution i still have to buy a portable, does it have to be a xts since i have an xtl5000? Or is there a cheaper handheld that will still allow the vrs to be the go between with the xtl?
