Outdoor Directional Yagi Results For Detroit PD/FD, Anyone?

Is Anyone Out Here In Metro Detroit, North Of 8-Mile Using A Yagi With Any Fair Amount Of Success?.....

I work for a local TV News station in Southfield and have installed a set of stacked yagi antennas. We can hear the control channel(868.725 Mhz) clearly but unfortunately still choppy audio on the broadcasts. I'd venture to guess that the signal level is probably not the issue here.

I bet you can pick up a FRS radio in downtown Detroit with that setup!

I too tried the Yagi antenna. Got 95 - 100 on the display but still choppy here in Troy.

The thing is is that you are receiving Det in Troy with an outdoor ant. but not with the stock rubber duckey correct?

I have done some talking and the problem is the modulation scheme. it is a different type, and the scanners cannot decode it properly. We will have to wait for Uniden and Radio shack to come out with upgrades. I too have a 7 element yagi with 10db and still cannot monitor it from ypsilanti.....

And I think you will not get great reception from Ypsi. I mean we are talking about being 40 or so miles away. That is a long distance to get Detroit's system.

Here in the Twin cities, if you are more than 10-15 miles from the nearest tower for a given system, you are rarely going to get a good signal, even with an outside antenna.

Since it's been an issue with Monroe Co subsystem and possibly the Genesee Co subsystem, I find it hard to believe it'll be different for any others until (unless) the scanner makers come up with an update.

The MPSCS page here says it won't start transitioning until late 2006 so I think you've got some time ;>

I used to know someone who had a 102" CB whip under a bed cover. They basicly mounted it sideways, in a "U" shape, with the feed point and tip both on the drivers side of the bed, and the center of it tied with string to the passengers side to hold it up. It was horizontal, and I'm not sure how good it worked, but I think he used it mainly for RX.
You could try to just mount it in the center of the bed, and make a upside-down "U", running it front to back, and maybe get dectent signal.

Well for starters you would be incorrect. I recieve the Detroit system from ypsilanti at about 95% decode rate, it does bounce around and it does it 0% quite often. I have no problems with it other than I cannot hear it clearly due to the choppyness of the modulation scheme.
