Does anyone know who was awarded the bid for the new Fire and SO communications set that went out back in January??

They are staying analog VHF. Just updating to more towers via microwave system. They are also upgrading to P25/DMR capable but not using it

I knew all about that not surprised with the DMR/P25 but if they ever do go to use it, it’ll be cool the system they have now is a complete joke so much interference from all the other towers up on top of Streaked Mountain

Any chance they are planning on a simulcast system or the same “pick your tower” system? Speaking for the fire side of things.

i hope no simcast I thought I read it was gonna stay a pick your tower. They wanted to go from just Spruce, Pleasant, Black to 13 different towers!

Thanks, that’s just the document I was looking for. Sorry to report it does look like it will be a voted simulcast system. For the end users that is much better. No more trying to figure out what site is the most appropriate. The system will decide for them.
Great now i will have to buy a beam. I could here it all great here in Lewiston so Im guessing im Screwed

It should work just fine without a new antenna. The design spec is for complete coverage using unity gain antennas. That means you should be able to receive anywhere in the county all towers. On a simulcast system the towers communicate with each other and all broadcast at the same time the same transmission.

Yea, outside the coverage area can present a problem. The issue is the signal becomes out of phase due to a number of reasons including multi-path. It's really location dependent. But, systems are not designed for long reach monitoring. They are designed for a specific area. It's the drawback of modern systems analog or digital.

I read the specs, looked to be a multi-site simulcast system, initially analog but P25 capable for future migration, but the county was open other proposals (i.e, DMR for example). It will have many more sites than they have now. It’s a long overdue project. The amount of interference between users on the different towers is ridiculous. They’re constantly walking over each other. I’m shocked that there was no mention of adding a secondary channel that could be used when the primary channel gets too busy with multiple calls. I know that finding clean VHF frequencies is a huge challenge, and adequate separation from the existing fire and SO frequencies is another challenge to deal with.
Can’t wait until my Sebago Lakes Region/Oxford County feed can receive all Oxford county traffic clearly. Their Black mountain site is nothing but noise right now due to distance and terrain.

I just hope I can get it here in Lewiston! I get Black a lot but it’s terrifying to hear all the interference from all the other towers up there and on Streaked too!
