P-cola Recovery

My sister in law is staying here with me in TX right now. She actually lives in Milton, FL. How is the recovery coming up there? I wouldn't mind having my living room back to being a living room again instead of a shelter.

My sister is married to a Squid (sailor) who is stationed as NAS P-cola. Has anyone heard how bad the damage is down at the base? Now that the storm is pretty much over we hear very little about your situation. She and her husband took of for TN to ride out the storm and I haven't heard anything from them. I am sure that they are OK.

What is the status of the I-10 and US 90 bridges? Will my sister in law have to return home by another route? I had heard that one of the spans was able to re-open, one lane each way.

I heard NAS was hit pretty hard. A section of eastbound lane of the i-10 bridge fell in the water with a semi on it so east and west bound traffic was rerouted on the westbound bridge. Haven't heard anything about 90 so I assume it's all clear.

Recovery

Recovery is going well considering the amount of damage. I am also in Milton, FL but I am a Maj. for Escambia Search and Rescue.
I-10 is open from the west up to Davis Hwy, and from the east at Scenic Hwy in Escambia County, It ends and starts at Avalon Blvd in Santa Rosa County as the bridges are out on both ends (both bridges). Hwy 90 is open throughout both Counties (very slow most of the time), There is still a curfew for civillians in both Counties from 12 AM until 5 AM.
The fishing bridges next to Hwy 98 (3-Mile Bridge), from Pensacola to Gulf Breeze is pretty much gone as well, there are a few segments left on each end.
The Theo Barrs bridge to Perdido Key is closed to the pulic because of some structural damage.
The CSX rairoad is now re-opened from losing some track on Scenic Hwy.
Many smaller, less-travelled roads (mostly dirt or roads in state hunting areas), are closed because trees are still across them.
Schools in Santa Rosa County are scheduled to open Oct. 11.
There are still many places without cable-tv service, telephone service, and power.
Gulf Power Crist Plant was damaged, they were only routing power from the S.E. Grid days after the Hurricane, there are large cranes over the plant now and I am not sure if they are producing electricty or still re-routing from the grid.
Langford Mills and Wicks (major producers of building trusses and other wood materials), are destroyed.
There was extensive flooding well inland in both Counties. The Ward Basin area and The East Bay area in Santa Rosa were under water during the surge and for a while after the storm. Many people were resscued via boat, and there was even 2 fire boats that were lost (sunken) due to debris during the rescues.

Thanks for the help. She made it home safely earlier in the week. She has power and phone. Things are going well for her. Her only damage was water being blown in under the eaves and minor structural damage to her porch. Thank God we were so lucky.
My wife and I are planning to move to Milton some time in the next year or so. She wants to be closer to her sister and I am not about to give up saltwater fishing. It all depends on finding a job and completing my degree. I am intrested in getting back into emergency services. Is your service paid or volunteer?
