• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I will be trying to program my P1225 radios. I have a RIB and will make the programming cable. I read the following on Bat labs:

Here's the pinout for the P1225 programming cable:

Looking at battery from rear contacts left to right

X1 X2 X3 X4
X2 Data Ground X3 Data Input

My question is: Do I install the battery and make contact through the charging contacts in the backof the battery, or do I leave the battery off and provide signal, ground and battery voltage through the radio contacts?,

Are you using a homemade programming cable or a programming cable you purchased?

You would most likely take the radio off of the P1225 and use the contacts on the radio.

Leave the battery off and provide power to the contacts on the back of the radio.

Thank you both. I am using an Ebay RIB and a home made cable. I tried it through the battery and it worked fine. I had to hold both bare wires against the battery terminals, so I need to create a better long term cable setup Next step is some channel programming and converting to narrowband.

P1225 Programming Cable Pinout

The photo is similar to the one I made from a bad P1225 battery years ago. The red and black are 7.5 volts and gnd/- power. This one has the RIB built into the DB9 connector housing.

I have the factory motorola programmer. It is just a charger base with another pin. I made a few of these when i worked at the shop. The board had runs to the back, but i just soldered wires to the battery tabs. Drop radio in charger base and program. SP50 did the same thing.

I have both the Motorola factory battery eliminator/programming cable and the Motorola 'drop-in charger' programming stand for both P1225 and SP50 radios. And being a service shop we build some very special cables and other test jigs here.

I personally prefer the battery eliminator programming cable.
