Hi all,

New to the forum, so I apologize if this has been a previous topic - but curious if anyone is aware of a system that allows for monitoring P25 systems but able to transmit on VHF/UHF Ham bands.

Pie in the sky would be a handheld that would allow me to monitor local police/fire, which utilize P25 Phase 1, while still retaining ability to communicate on local ham repeaters (VHF/UHF) - all in one radio.

Totally naive and new to the hobby, so apologies in advance. Any insight or info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You didn’t say which band the p25 system is in and if it’s conventional or trunked.
If it’s in vhf or uhf, then a Motorola APX700 in vhf/uhf-r1 will do it. If it’s 700 or 800, you’ll need an APX-8000 to get all 3 bands. If it’s trunked, that is whole another level of complexity.
Another option is a Harris Unity. Programming software is hard to come by though.

Basically in either case, you are buying a public safety radio and just using the ham frequencies with it.

Answer is none.

STOP recommending Motorola radios to SCAN systems. If you need to SCAN, buy a SCANner.

1) "Syskeygen" is a LEAKED proprietary Motorola tool that should have never seen public eyes
2) Just because it was leaked, doesn't make it legal
3) Creating a false key for a system, even for listening, can be considered forgery in some jurisdictions,
and 4) you just piss off system admins.

5) A tiny mistake in programming could prevent a legitimate system user from properly operating, which could place the user in a life threatening situation if it is public safety.

Just to be clear, I never recommended a Motorola (or any) to scan a trunked system. The OP’s first post said P25 Phase 1. That could be easily have been conventional. I specifically said trunking is a whole different level.
That’s also why I mentioned the Harris...nothing difficult (besides the programming software) or dangerous with the right Harris model.
I agree that a Motorola and NAS in the wrong hands can do bad things.

But it does show a possible market....a ham dualbander with an integrated scanner. (If it has a can opener and nail cutters, all the better :)

Remember too, there are P25 ham repeaters...and the only stuff around to do that is commercial gear.
