I've today received a submission indicating the first usage of digital modulation in the Calgary area besides the agencies on the 753F trunk system.

CP Rail Police in Calgary are apparently using the modulation on 160.545. I am most likely too far away from a rail line to monitor it from home, so I'm going to take a listen next time I'm in town.

I was reading not too long ago on this site (possible Rail Forum) about RR's starting to use P25, starting with RR police and security ops. Should be enough railfans around that report on this. I usually just scan the sub-bands once in a while myself.

There was a press release on the Motorola website a few years back about one of the roads (UP?) implementing a P25 system.

I've heard IMBE on one of CP rail's MOW repeaters during an inversion. A US road must be using IMBE on the input.

A friend reported CP Rail police disappeared off of their CP 51 159.8850 frequency in the Toronto area a couple of years ago. I thought that they had possibly gone P25 but he's heard nothing with his digital scanner.

The Signals and Communications department have switched over to Mike phones so I suspected CP Police had moved there as well.

160.5450 is listed as CP70 Police Mutual Aid in the 2004 edition of the Canadian Trackside Guide. It also shows 159.8850 as CP51 Police in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Winnipeg.

Guess I'll have to plug in 160.5450 and see what I hear in the Toronto area.

Do you guys not have any federal jails or anything down there to monitor P25 conventional? I thought all the federal CSC compounds were P25 conventional.

There's the Calgary Remand Centre complex, with CYOC and all the rest included, but I don't think any of them are federal, and I've never explored their communications systems.

TAFL does not list any CSC facilities in southern Alberta.

TAFL doesn't list any Federal prison frequencies. They've been grouped into the category of police agency, therefore you won't find them on TAFL. There are no Federal facilities in Calgary, unless something opened up since the time I lived there.

There are a number of provincial jails (Calgary Remand Centre, a Young Offender jail, and one other if I correctly recall. Unfortunately, the frequencies for the provincial jails have also been removed from TAFL.

With regard to the federal prisons being all digital, that is probably correct. I've heard reports that the Edmonton jail uses P25 digital, and I've heard the Saskatoon Psychiatric Centre (a federal facility for psychiatric care of prisoners, including psychiatric assesments, which is run with the security levels of a maximum security institute) using digital.

I did catch either CP or CN police in Edmonton one morning using P25 as one of the units were confirming a food order at McDonalds drive thru window with another patrol unit.

Now there's some exciting listening for you. That's sure worth the price of a digital scanner! Is this why we are in the hobby? :D
