Workin at the gas station I talk to copo's on the regular.. Not sure what kind of radio there using but the audio is incredible. The sound is clear of any hashing and garbling and any thing else. it's just the voice clean and clear. + the variation in the voice is really good, you can really tell the charicter. How's it that there audio is so sweet??? I know scanners aren't made like radio's but how!?

Its the sign of the times with simulcasting technology that is now GPS based, the computer generated coverage contours, and the high end audio processing that is being done in the radios yes they really do sound sweet even in analog modes.

Your tax dollers at work! Also they might have a person who put together a good radio plan when the system went out to bid. I know when we went to our new system they tested everywhere with HT's for months because that was in the contract that HT's neede to work everywhere in the county.

The gas station is 1 mile from pd and I think theres is a tower within 1 mile of the windows of the gas station.

Commercial radios are going to sound much better. Remember, they're not as broadbanded as a scanner is. When I listened to WCPD on my Motorola portable, it sounds so much better than on my scanner, hence why I use Motorola radios for scanners as well as for ham.

There's two components at play here:
The first is that most commercial and all public safety radios have better speakers and significatly higher audio power. One of my primary wishes with regard to scanners is that they could come approach the conventional audio of PS radios.

The second is that for digital modes, the public safety radios far exceed the processing of the audio by means of DSP or digital signal processing. Simply, they use processing tricks to optimize the percieved speech audio. For this, we can't really expect the scanner manufacturers to keep up with the PS big boys.

I modded my scanner to clean up the audio so it sounds just about as good as what my Motorolas sound. I replaced the speaker in the scanner with a fuller range speaker and used filter caps to clean up some of the hissing and other sounds that scanners produce. it sounds really good, wish i could do the same for my portable scanner but there just isnt room inside

We did drive tests simulating portable radio coverage in a 2500 square mile county during the acceptance period. We had staff driving around for a month covering as many 1 mile square grids that we could get to by automobile. It paid for itself knowing we have over 97% coverage inside medium density buildings with the public safety speaker mic and 100% outdoor coverage. :D

On ours they sent people out in teams with HT's and GPS. You called in the spot where you were at and they logged how the sound was on both sides. Kern county is over 8,000 square miles with mountains, valleys and deserts.

Our was an automatic system that logged the signal level of the control channel and the BER of the astro digital portion of the system. There was attenuation put into the antenna system to simulate the level the system would see with all of the losses while using a PSM on the "talk-back" which is 0.5 Watt ERP inside of a 17dB building.

We felt that audio tests are very subjective and vary from person to person, so we decided not to do it that way.

No mountains or valley's here, just everglades/wetlands covering most of the area in the center which made access very difficult.
