P25 Trunking System Questions? How do I hear it all?

Hello, I'm trying to listen to local LE / Fire / etc on this system:

WyoLink

What I'm confused about is this: I think I'm missing local stuff by monitoring one site. I most certainly don't see talkgroups from outside the county coming through (despite being a statewide system), and at times, I don't see some traffic I'd expect to see locally either. This led me to the theory that only some TGs are being broadcast from some sites at any given time. Is this possible / accurate? If so, is there any way to know which sites I need to add to get complete local coverage? I ask for two reasons:

- When I turn on a bunch of sites in my scanner, the scanning takes so long going between sites that I believe I'm missing calls.
- I also setup a Trunk-Recorder / Rdio instance, and adding a bunch of sites takes a bunch of SDRs and processing, which is prohibitive.

I can't shake the idea that traffic "follows" the use here, and that not everything is being broadcast everywhere despite being a statewide system. Thanks for the assistance with my ignorance in advance!

A statewide system allows use across the state, however you usually only hear traffic affiliated with your particular site. You will not hear all traffic all the time. As far as knowing which sites you need, it is basically trial and error. Start by programming in sites that are about 20 miles around you and listen, see what traffic is on each and keep notes.

Yes, more sites you have programmed the longer it takes to scan, and you will miss traffic when the scanner is listening to control channels out of range.

Thank you, that's what I was afraid of. Are these transient, or consistent? If they're consistent, I wonder why we don't track that info in the database as well. If they're transient, I guess there's no hope on that front.

if you could post where you live, it helps.
they might use a local conventional frequency.
also what radio.

I am in Cheyenne, and have a Uniden BCD436HP and a Trunk-Recorder/Rdio setup.

after a sort, it seems there is more than one tower in play here.

Transient, typically if a unit travels it is able to affiliate with other towers/sites if allowed by the agency responsible for the set up of the system. It would be virtually impossible to accurately keep track of the thousands of TGs on each state system and what site they are allowed on.

Oh yeah. That's my concern, especially on the SDR side, but also with the scanner trying to scan that many sites and missing calls. Guess it'll be trial and error to see what works.

unidens spend about 2 seconds on any trunked system for 'housekeeping' no matter what.
but if there are any that you can't receive normally, don't put them in.

Try directly going to those CC's on the sites and only put the sites that come in into your radio as part of the system.

Also, adding an extra talkgroup as a wildcard/ID search just to catch the extra traffic that might be happening would probably be a good idea.
