• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

DO NOT ASK ME FOR HELP PROGRAMMING YOUR RADIO. NO.
I've seen a P7100, listening to a local EDACS system, which is programmed as receive only, scanning and operating normally, and at times, with nobody touching the radio, the LCD and keypad backlights come on but there is no indication that the radio is transmitting.

Any idea what's going on here? Radio being polled, maybe? Or put into remote monitor?

Most things that would turn on the backlight are 'digital' in nature... a keypress for example. One exception is the volume control, that is still an analogue control - though the radio does digitally sample this analogue control. A bit of dirt in the volume pot, a slight instability of the voltage supplied to the pot, or if no digital hysteresis is incorporated, a pot setting right on the edge between two digital steps could be responsible. This is sometimes but not always accompanied by an indication on the display that the volume setting has changed. I've noticed this all the way back to the MRK.

I have seen this in my radios also. Depending on the LID you have programmed it could be responding to a ping, receive data or a profile request. Even with it set to receive only, if the LID is sent a message the radio will respond. That being said, there will usually be an indication on the display like DATA RX or PRO RX. I have not seen what happens when a ping is sent from the controller. When my radios did it there was nothing on the display, no volume adjust, nothing. I don't know if it is just a glitch in the code that it suddenly thought there was a reason to light the display or what, but the TX indicator never lit and from what i can tell nothing changed.

Im wondering, since it goes all the way back to the MRK, if it isnt just some kind of logic that was written into the first radios that they never went back and corrected or just didn't see it as a big problem. As I write this, i do know that when an accessory is attached to the side of the radio, the backlight will light up with nothing showing on the display. Perhaps static electricity present on the port would cause it to briefly think the voltage on the sense pin had changed?

Long story short, not really sure what causes it, but i have personally seen it on all my p7100's on all diff frequency bands, as well as 700p's and MRKs.

I too have seen it on some ma/comms, as well as some of the newer Tait radios on a DTR system.
