To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

P7100 doesn't RX analog or unencrypted P25C traffic when keyloaded?

Can anyone confirm whether or not the P7100 will receive analog or unencrypted P25 conventional traffic when the radio is keyloaded?

Interesting...the manual seems to indicate it will receive encrypted traffic in "private" mode, but it won't receive digital, only analog. That begs to question, does the P7100 mute encrypted P25 conventional traffic when it detects a key mismatch?

I don't believe it does.... but it depends what you mean by key mismatch. Different KID than expected or proper KID but different key value? I don't think I have a P7100 around to play with but I do have a P7200 with AES/DES in it I could experiment with.

Either...or... It would just seem odd if it didn't allow clear P25C traffic through, but then let's the non-decrypted traffic, with the resulting garbled audio, through.

I have this P7100 VHF loaded with J2R18H09 and F9R06G02. I haven't had the ability to load any keys into it yet. I was just a little puzzled by the description of how the radio should operate, according to the manual, when receiving analog, unencrypted and encrypted P25C traffic when the radio is keyloaded and set for private operation.

Anyone have a keyload or "modified" programming cable that they would be willing to part with? I've tried several times to convert this RPM1132472/35 into a keyload cable with the 2210 Ohm resistance added between the E8 and E10 pins and it still won't put any of my P7100 radios into keyload mode. They just go into normal programming mode.

I'm not sure the model number, but I have an OEM Harris cable that works great on P7200s, but I don't think I've ever successfully loaded a 7100. I've heard others say you need the hardware Harris keyloader but I'm not 100% on that.

A 7100 will load fine with Key Loader software. You just have to modify the programming cable. I added a toggle switch to my aftermarket cable and it works great.

I had to start with a new pogo populated mic PCB and build mine from scratch. Add the toggle switch with resistors as rescue161 describes, it works with the keyload software or programs with RPM.

You don't 'add' the 2210 resistor, it has to replace the existing resistor.
The toggle switch give the selectivity as programmer or keyloader without swapping resistors.

Well, I had a brain fart and completely forgot about removing the tiny little 0 Ohm SMD resistor. With it still in place it's essentially causing current to mostly bypass the 2210 Ohm's worth of resistance. I had to use two 1/4 watt resistors, in this case, and basically had to physically place them completely away from the board and jammed into the deepest corner of the connector housing. It was a real PITA!

There wasn't even enough clearance for shrink tubing, so I had to insulate the board from the resistor leads, and each lead from the other, with kapton tape. It was a really tight fit. In the aggravation of the whole process I had forgot all about the little "short" 0 Ohm resistor still being in place.

Time to take it all apart again. S**t!

These RPM1132472/35 programming cable housings aren't as "roomy" on the inside as the older LPE/MRK/700P programming cables. Not much room for two 1/4 watt 1% tolerance resistors in series.

Nice! I wish these cable housings had that kind of room.

Well, I took the cable apart, re-did the connection with the resistors, and this time managed to use shrink wrap, by routing the resistors differently. Still a tight fit, but everything looks much tidier. The P7100 initially showed NO KEY BANK and then booted up to the HOME system. I then realized that I had not assigned any key banks in RPM, which oddly enough, I thought only applied to ProVoice private operation. All other encryption settings for P25C operation had been configured.

Once I did reprogrammed the radio, it then showed KEY LOAD BANK 1. However, key loader software can not talk to the P7100 and load any keys. The radio never displays KEY IDLE and the key loader software just times out saying that it can't connect to the radio. I can still re-load keys into a P7200, so the cable works, but now that the cable is converted to a key load cable, I can no longer program the P7200. It powers up, then goes into self test, and then just goes into an endless power up boot loop. There is no 3 finger button press, to go into programming mode, sequence for these. You have to have the "proper" configured programming cable.

The help section mentions that the key loader software won't work with the older I/Q series P7100's, that run on "G" series DSP code. Being that this was an engineering prototype, it's an older FM series P7100, but it has all features enabled and is loaded with the later "F9" series DSP code.In fact, it is now currently loaded with the latest F9R06N05 DSP code. I did notice when the KEY LOAD BANK 1 is displayed, on the radio screen, the operating mode indicates "A" for analog, for some reason, even though the radio is programmed to power up on a P25 conventional channel.

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, let me know. Otherwise I'm going to remove the resistors, re-connect pins E8 and E10 with a jumper, and return it back to a proper working programming cable.

Is the P7100 supposed to display KEY LOAD IDLE as soon as the radio powers up or is correct for the radio to power up and display KEY LOAD BANK = 1?

Has anyone here key loaded a P7100 with F9R06N05 DSP? I'm curious to know if anything this radio is displaying is correct.

My P7100 has F9R06G02 and it loads AES/DES keys just fine. I connect my cable and put the switch to KEYLOAD. Then, make sure that the key is loaded into Key Loader and that the correct COM port is selected. Then I power on the radio and the display on the radio shows: KEY LOAD IDLE and it also has the "A" on the bottom center of the screen. Then I press the load button on the Key Loader software and it loads the key. Mine does not show KEY LOAD BANK = 1.

My cable works fine with P7100/P7200 for programming when my switch is in the PROGRAMMING setting. I think it still works for programming when in KEYLOAD mode, but I always switch to the mode that I need.

I also tried loading F7 DSP and the same results. If I don't select a key bank in RPM. This radio powers up and then quickly displays NO KBANK ERROR=0871, then goes to the system it'a set to power up on. Only when I select a number for max key banks does the radio power up and then displays a constant KEY LOAD BANK = 1. It never displays KEY LOAD IDLE.

I don't think this radio ever made it to the development point of supporting key loading, via the Key Loader software. Which is odd because it has AES and DES enabled in it, as a result of having all 40 features enabled. If it was only capable of being key loaded through the M/A-Com physical key loader. it would never be able to have AES keys loaded.
