• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

My agency is working on getting on the P800 system and need to purchase some radios to get programmed. I'd prefer to purchase pre-owned and not break the bank. What are some mobile and portable radio options out there? I've seen some decent prices for XTL2500 but is that the most cost effective option?

"P800" isn't even a term that's recognized. What do you mean?

Public safety 800 MHz? Maybe that's what you mean?

No agency that wants to get access to such a system would be advised by ANYBODY to try to do it with used gear.

If you're allowed access to somebody else's system, they're going to have equipment standards for you to meet. Pretty much guaranteed. Picking up random used gear guarntees problems with features and functions. They often won't have the features they need for THAT system.

Besides, any two radios that aren't IDENTICAL in model number and features requires extra effort to program because you can't clone across dissimiliar radios without extra effort.

The agency that controls access to the system in question should be able to tell you where to go to obtain compatible radios. And the answer will probably be to the radio shop that serves the agency contract.

You need to be talking to THEM, not this forum.

If your talking about the Palmetto 800 I am sure they have an approved list of radios for the system. Any regional/county system I've ever worked with has an approved list. Have you went to the system managers and asked for this list ?

OK then.

Read the document I just provided a link for and use the information within it to figure out how to move forward.

The answer, put simply, is that you need to go through proper channels and not try to get on the system with used radios bought on ebay or our own classified section.

Odds of being allowed to put random used radios on the system are close to zero.

Page 27 of this guide has the information you most need to make use of at this point.

Guaranteed. Radios for professional public safety use should only come from authorized, vetted sources. Not hobbyists, or enthusiasts.
Guidance and planning should come from appropriate AHJ and public safety professionals, not hobbyists or enthusiasts.

Reach out to Palmetto 800 before you buy any XTS/ XTL model radios. Wouldn’t want you to end up with expensive paper weights

Better yet, don't try to do anything yourself. Do not buy ANY radios or equipment. It's not your job. An agency that has a need to be on that system will have a designated representative whose job is to use the contact information on Page 27 of the guide to start the process of getting on the system via approved official channels.

This scenario is not one where hobbyists/enthusiasts have ANY business getting involved. Let the professionals do their jobs
BY THE CONTRACT SPECIFICATIONS.

I recommend closing this topic. The OP has received the information he NEEDS. Which is....let the professionals and officials handle it.
