District 4 was doing radio tests a while back. Usually, before the roll out in a given area, DCNR personnel can be heard doing radio tests using portables on the Global Tac channels. These same radios float around the state (same RIDS) in advance of the roll outs. They were recently heard testing in Districts 17 and 18.

If I had to guess, I would say District 4 is on the air now or will be soon. I'm not familiar with their daily operations, but it seems most of the state forest lands for that district are in the Laurel Highlands area. So, they would probably mostly affiliate with tower sites out that way. DCNR has clear talkgroups and encrypted talkgroups. They do not appear to use selectable encryption. If they want to go secure, they change to a secure channel, same as PGC.
I've been looking for any new DCNR activity in NW PA (Erie County). So far I haven't seen any new antennas on ranger vehicles. When you mention radio tests on the Global TAC channels, are you referring to the statewide global TGs (10078, 10079,.....), or the DCNR TG's 12718, etc.)? So far I've heard nothing on any TG's. Has anyone heard anything yet in NW PA?

I've logged 2 hits on DCNR TGs. 12674 on 11/03/20 and 12723 on 10/17/20. Both were one time only and have not been seen since,

The StateWide Global TAC's. TAC 10 & 11 were used when they tested Districts 4 & 6

Simulcast subsites do not use different NACs, so it's highly unlikely that Site 16 ERIE40 and Site 92 ERIE82 are a simulcast cell if the RRDB is up to date. It does appear that the wiki is wrong as far as the primary control channel assignments for those two sites, however.

It also wouldn't make sense for a site in southern Crawford County to be part of a simulcast with two northern Erie County sites, when in fact there are three sites in between them (Site 11 ERIE80, Site 6 CRAW01, and Site 7 CRAW37).

The Op hasn't indicated what frequency or NAC was received, Perhaps it was one of the other sites. If the NAC was different, Well that suggests there is just possibly a new Site ID to determine, I did not say it was a simulcast (hence the  that was used in the post). And the license in question appears to still be pending. The Op has just possibly picked up one of the other two sites in an effort to see if CRAW33 is on the air. [It's the primary reason the info was posted above] :geek:

Anyone else notice how the Game Commission dispatchers love to shove the mic into their mouth when they talk? I can barely understand them! I'm talking about the SW Dispatch

It sounds that way on SE also but I think what's really going on is the dispatchers are using some sort of patch.

I'm in Sharon and I'm wondering if I'll even be possible to listen to the one and only Mercer County Site from 20 miles away when and if the county begins using this system or if I should begin looking for an outdoor antenna for this system? I know I need a scanner that picks up the Phase II TDMA so we need not bring that up.

Program the control channel for the site in question into your BCD-996XT and hold on that channel. If the radio decodes it and displays the site info then you are golden. If it does not then an antenna system needs to be considered.

(Yes I know the 996XT is phase one, but it will decode the control channel just fine, just won't track correctly if at all)

Saw a brand new ranger vehicle in Erie County Sunday. No sign of antennas for the new system. They just put the old beat up OpenSky antennas on it. So looks like any change to the new P25 in Erie County will be awhile.

I'm curious as to the antenna setup for some of the sites on this system. I have it in my Unication and I've noticed some sites have coverage that booms out quite far from the tower while others seem to be limited in scope. I've noticed with the Newtown Square site coming east on West Chester Pike my Unication switches from Devault 800 to Newtown Square (also 800) around 926. When I get up to Delchester Rd and go into the little valley there I go out of range of the system until I come back up the hill right by the county line and it comes up with the Newtown Square site again. I'm wondering how the antennas are setup on this site particularly as I seem to pick it up good from the south (as far down as Chester) but not really much from the other directions.

Also a question that @HM1529 might be able to answer - has PSP Troop T migrated to the P25 or are they still on Open Scam? Listening on the Turnpike VHF channels the PSP units definitely sound to be patched from digital still but I just can't tell which system they're actually using.

My understanding is that Troop T is still on OpenSky which is patched to the VHF repeaters.
