Just purchased a PA300 690009 24vdc model. My questions are #1 Do I need to run a converter or a second battery, or how do I power this thing at 24volts? And #2 are there any cheap speaker recommendations? Is there a way a can do a "hillbilly" hook up just to make sure its working. Maybe connect to battery and a little speaker? Purchased used for $55. Thanks for the feedback!

Buy a 24>12VDC converter and be done with it. Able2/Show-Me or NewMar. Just make sure that the amp capacity is enough. PA300's are power hungry.

2-12V batteries in series will give you your "hillbilly hookup" to see if it works. A couple of lawn-garden batteries would do for test purposes but not for permanent use, as jeatock states they do suck amps. Don't fire it up without a speaker attached. A "small one" may last long enough to insure that it works, but you'll need a decent horn rated for 200W. If it does work, go ahead and get the converter for it, I don't have experience with the 24v models but have used the 12V versions extensively for years and they're next thing to bullet-proof. Be sure and enable the "Tap II" function, both for convenience and also you'll find some additional tones you didn't know it could make!

The best bet would be a converter. But, for the money of a good convertor you could probably buy a good second hand (or even new on Amazon) PA300 12v model and be done with it. That's what I would do. Less equipment to fail, and easier installation. If you have no other use for the 24v unit, re-sell it. Someone out there im sure could use it. Just a thought.
