I'm wondering if the 'packet' port on the icom pcr-1500/2500 is a true discriminator tap or simply a data output port (a la the GRE-PSR 500/600)? (Mods, if this is in the wrong forum, please move to the correct one.)

Thanks,

It's not a direct 'discriminator' output but there is only limited filtering on it compared to a normal audio output

Okay,

I'm wondering if I can use it with programs such as unitrunker to be able to view any "data" (ie control channels) on a frequency?

Thanks,

Not many nets over here but can confirm that both the PCR1000 and PCR2500 data output work fine with trunker, unitrunker and PDW

works great on Unitrunker, Trunkmon, trunk88, treport, and many others.

Takes a very weak signal for trunking and turns it into 100% decoded.

PM if you need any other questions answered about the 1500.

Has anyone had any experience/tips to get the packet port on the R1500 to work with audio fed to DSD? I have the software setup and verified working from another discriminator audio source, but when I try the R1500 I get no decoding. I've tried various audio levels with no success. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

What type of signal are you decoding? ProVoice is difficult to decode due to the filtering but there is a mod to bypass the filtering so that the port becomes true discriminator audio.

On a related note - I've seen the mod to bypass the RC filter on the '2500. I don't think the mod was ever described for the '1500. I can't find a link to the mod for either model. Anyone know where to find it?

I have absolutely no problems using Unitrunker, trunker or DSD using the r2500 packet output. It works flawlessly decoding Provoice - am using the windows compiled DSD version.

Maybe it works fine on Provoice but it does not work for some other data types. You still need true unfiltered data for that and the packet ports are not unfiltered.
I tried my R2500 with DSD on a P25 system and it did not work worth a darn. Same setup but with a discrimantor tapped radio worked fine. I did the filter mod on my 2500 and it then worked very well on the same P25 signal I tried before.
Some data types can use the headphone data as is. It all depends on what it is you wish to decode.

edit: The P25 system that the factory filtered packet ports would not work with DSD was a weak signal system for me. Once I removed the small amount of filtering on those ports, DSD worked fantastic. They did pass single channel P25 data from a strong signal source though.

work fine on my side, decoding vary depending on the sound card used.
my onboard sound card is getting a good decoding rate in dsd over my added PCI one: too much bell and whistle.
