• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I belong to a volunteer emergency organization and we page using our hand held and base/mobile Kenwood radios. The Sheriff Department calls us on the radio and our "Dispatcher" picks up the call and pages us.

You will need to have a front pannel button programmed as "2-Tone".
Under the edit tab select "2-tone" and enter if it is a single or two tone.
Label the use in the 2-Tone Name for the group.
Enter the First Tone [hz]
Enter the Second Tone {hz}

You will also need to enter the duration times, gap time and first tone delay time.
After the file is writyten to the radio to page.

In our case we use the "B" front pannel button for paging.
You will select the channel to set the tones off
Then select the 2-tone button you have programmed to view the paging group.
[In our case we have four different paging groups].
If more than one use your up and down function to scroll to the proper paging group required.
Then key your PTT switch to generate the tone and after the tone ends give your message.

We use this method using Kenwood TK-760,860,7160,7180,8160 and 8180 base/mobile radios. The hand held we use are Kenwood TK-372, 3140 and 3173. It is very easy to use and makes anybody in our agency capability of being a dispatcher without having to purchase any additional equipment. We use UHF repeater system and have very good coverage.

Thanks MJ. When I get to this I might need you to help me a little more. Lol. Is it better to have a separate channel programmed in the radio just to page off of. Same freq we talk on is the same freq we get paged out on. So the second channel will be the same freq. just name it "fire page" With the tone set in just that channel.

Nick,

You do not need a separate channel for paging it is not a channel specific parameter. The paging information is entered and stored under a different part of the file. The 2-tone information will work on any channel.

Also a revision to scroll through different paging groups us the "2-Tone" button you have programmed.

Good luck

One thing you might a want to consider is putting the repeater output in the radio as a simplex channel. Provided you're dispatcher pages you through a repeater the most likely scenario is you lose the repeater. While your range would likely be reduced you could still set off pages in a good area depending on terrain etc. My dept runs 7180's and we have that ability from the station as well as command vehicle.
