Painting a 250D?

The metal surround on the front of my 250 was kind of scratched up and stuff, so I pulled it off and painted it a dark gray color, a bit lighter than the plastic of the radio, but it gives a neat two tone effect which I kind of like. Anyway, I was thinking of painting the chrome speaker grill black or something since it sticks out like a sore thumb now. Anyboduy know if this can be painted, or is the chrome too slick to hold paint well? Any Idea how I might get the chrome plating off, if it is a plated piece?

I painted it black with a sharpie. You have to do it 5 or 6 times.
