Hi everyone.

I'm new to the scanner world and I just got a Pro-97. I have setup several local freqs but cant really seem to understand the trunking setup.

I'm looking to setup the Port Authority Police. I'm using this site:
http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&sid=408

What does the red vs. blue numbers mean? How does this impact how I setup my scanner?

Any advice on getting this working would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

For starters, since this is an EDACS system, you need to program each set of frequencies in it's own bank as follows (perhaps someone who has a Pro-97 could explain it better; I'm basing this off my experiences with a Pro-95, which has a similar programming procedure):

Bank 1 (Primary):
100 - LOCK-OUT
101 - 866.21250
102 - 866.81250
103 - 867.37500
104 - 868.60000
105 - 867.87500
106 - 868.55000
107 - 868.91250

Bank 2 (Holland Tunnel):
200 - LOCK-OUT
201 - 866.4125
202 - 867.7875

Bank 3 (WTC):
300 - LOCK-OUT
301 - 866.0750
302 - 866.3875
303 - 868.1000

While this doesn't have as much effect on an EDACS system compared to a Motorola system, the red channels are the primary control channels; blue channels are secondary control channels.

Ok thanks. A quick question:

Should I assume that once I program all these I just press SCAN and it will pick up the calls?

Thanks!

Does anyone monitor the PAPD? Anything interesting? I'm doing it mostly to hear the air units which I see around my area.

Another question,

I'm still trying to understand how to program trunking. Can I put the PAPD freqs in any bank? For example I want to use Bank 2 for the PAPD.

What will I hear from the individual freqs without the entire group entered?

As you can see, I'm pretty clueless so I appreciate your help.

Well, I would not bother to program the WTC freqs, they have not been used since, well you know when. That repeater was lost.....

Actually, to hear PAPD, all you need is the first set. The Lincoln Tunnel comes up on the main trunk. Not too sure about the Holland tunnel list - just run the first set of channels, lots of activity in NY and NJ.

I monitor the system to listen to the aviation unit which is Port 1 and Port 2 and the ARFF alerts out of Newark Airport. Otherwise a lot of PAPD operations chit chat.

Good luck and happy monitoring.

The three frequencies listed for WTC were never used before 9/11. They were used after the pit had been cleared. It's a very low power operation with even less traffic.

The three EDACS channels (one control channel, two voice channels) were installed inside the WTC and were run through the complex by Radiax, bi-directional amplifiers and an outside antenna pointing up in between the buildings at the rooftop. They were never widely used despite having been tested.

That system was engineered to contain most of its power to the WTC campus, so it would not be heard all over the place. The plan was to have an "inside" and "outside" system setup, with the outside being on top of 2 WTC, simulcast with Todt Hill.

Go the bank where you have programmed the PAPD EDACS system. Rather than scan, try manually listening to each of the frequencies on manual. See if you can copy the control channel. If you can't, you'll need an outdoor antenna. This system tends to be fairly limited in coverage, depending on your locatyion.
