PARK COUNTY - The sheriff who was in charge during the Platte Canyon High School hostage situation and shooting foiled a high-speed chase on Saturday.

A Park County Sheriff's Deputy responded to a report of a hit-and-run accident involving a car and a motorcycle at about 10:20 a.m., Park County Sheriff's Office said.

According to authorities, the hit-and-run incident occurred on Highway 285, approximately two miles north of Bailey.

After the deputy reported seeing the motorcyclist speeding south, Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener set up a road block on Highway 285, south of Platte Canyon High School at about 10:27 a.m., police said.

When the motorcycle approached the road block, the rider appeared to be stopping, but then accelerated and knocked Wegener to the ground, authorities said.

Sheriff Wegener pursued the motorcyclist in his car, reaching speeds of 145 mph and passing cars in an unsafe manner, police said.

The chase continued south on Highway 285, through South Park, where the Colorado Highway Patrol joined the pursuit, authorities said.

At about 10:42 a.m., near the town of Como, Wegener managed to force the motorcyclist off the road with his car, police said.

According to authorities, the suspect was taken into custody and booked into the Park County Jail.

Wegener received treatment at the scene for scrapes and bruises, police said.

The suspect name was not immediately released.
