Today I saw two park policemen with digital hand helds. I believe that they were XTS3000. But, the park police seem to still be using their analog 166.925 channel. Strange...

Just a few questions come to mind..... did the XTS 3K's have VHF antennas? If not were the antennas UHF? Were the officers in the D.C. area at the time and could they possibly be using the D.C. Police trunked system? Does the Park Police have a talkgroup on the military trunked system in D.C.? Things that make you go hmmmm.

Sounds like a situation where Mr. Optoelectronics Scout can come in handy

I've seen some Park Police units with digital portables, but definitely not all of them. The antennas are VHF. My guess is they're using the portables in analog mode on their regular frequencies for now, but may have them for a possible move to digital in the future.

All Federal opearations are supposed to be narrow-banded by this January, 2005. The Dep of Interior (includes NPS, BLM, etc) has chosen to go Project25. There is a wealth of information about this on the web. All law enforcement activities MUST have high-level encrytion capablities, it is manadated. Notice I said capablities not full-time encrytion.

No, I did not say all Federal to go P25 by 2005, I said narrowband. The forest service has chosen to go analog narrowband for now (11k0 emmission) but they are looking at project25.

I have received P25 transmissions on USPP channels using my 250d, so it looks like you did indeed witness them using VHF digitals.

Just remember they can mandate anything they want but if there is no money available for it in the budget it aint gonna happen. Park Police officers have been told for years they were gettting a new radio system so I wouldnt make any assumptions that the change with be right around the corner. However having said, for the officers sakes, that I would be very happy to be proven wrong.
