Is anyone hearing Parsippany Police on 866.375 (PL 151.4)? I've been in Parsippany at least 5 times in the last 2 weeks right around rush hour, stuck in traffic on Rt. 10, and haven't heard a peep on that frequency which is very weird since it is usually some what busy. I even tried it without the PL and on 2 different hand-held scanners as well. Did they change frequencies??

It sounds like Parsippany PD's radio system will be digital capable.

This afternoon I heard digital modulation on what traditionally has been the dispatch frequency, 866.375 MHz.

There were repeated digital transmissions over the course of several hours. Whether these were tests or live traffic I cannot determine. I have a BC250D without the digital card.

Can someone with a digital-capable scanner provide a report?

Dispatch has moved back to F1 (866.375) and is now P25 Astro Digital! Don't know if F2 (867.800) is now digital or not. Anyone have that answer?

I have heard some very brief (one or two seconds) digital transmissions on F2 (867.800) this weekend but other than that, no traffic on that frequency at all.

I think the cutover to digital on F1 (866.375) occurred on Thursday 2/10/05.

Thanks Sybex7254 for confirming this is indeed APCO P25!

Now I'll have to invest in the BCi25D digital card for my BC250D.

I have my 796D in my vehicle, I can confirm that it picked up some indication of p25 and lnk while on that frequency but the information is distorted most of the time. I am assuming that I do not have the P25 tuned properly for that frequency, anyone have any luck listening to them and being able to understand the conversation? I would be interested in how you tuned the P25.

Nothing really needs to be done with a BC796D. I have a BC296D and all you need to do is make sure there isn't a PL or DCS programmed for that frequency and it should work fine. Same goes for all digital frequencies with that radio.

change to frequencies

I noticed that the dispatch is now on 851.375 and has 852.800, they applied for changes in January of this year, looks like they made them this week.

Also, if you have a Bearcat, you might want to also put modulation in "FM" mode as opposed to "NFM" mode for P25 conventional. That seems to help with reception (I can't vouch if that works for the 796 or 996; I'm just basing this off my use of the 396).

The 15 MHz drop is due to rebanding...

Did anyone grab a NAC yet for them with the PSR series scanners ?

Glad to see someone else is aware of rebanding. It is a process of clearing the lower channels so that the NPSPAC ie: 866+ channels will be moved to these lower channels. As with most everything else NJ is behind the curve on this.
All of the 866, 867, 868 channels will all be gone as a result of rebanding. Those channels will be part of the the new non public safety band.

293 I believe, I programmed my xts5000 and was listening to them in the storm today. one thing I notice while listening to their channel in digital is that they talk too fast and many times words seem to blend together producing an entirely new word making the conversation unintelligable, I always here them having to repeat things several times. if they talked slower it would sound ok when the signals are good. this is the first apco-25 user I have monitored so maybe this is normal.

Now this is a new complaint I have never heard in radio. The people using it are talking too fast and the digital isn't fast enough. NO, it's the digital system. It has nothing to do with how fast anyone talks. Get used to it.

too fast

Yes, I listened very carefully yesterday as I was in that area and the officers that spoke clearly you could understand what they were talking about, most of the time the dispatcher spoke his words were all unintelligable most of the time until he spoke clearly. I could tell from experience that part of the problem was that the dispatcher was not talking directly into whatever kind of mic they use, after responding to countless complaints at dispatch centers and standing back and observing how many of the dispatchers use their equipment you can tell. I guess when the digitized audio is converted back to analog it reconstructs it as to what it thinks it might be and that must include the GIGO garbage in garbage out phenomenon.
