To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

All,

Anybody got the part number for the RS232 programming cable to program an XTL5000 with W7 control head through the mike port? Better yet, anybody got one they would like to sell?

I've already got the data cable which programs the radio through the rear accessory port, but I've just been presented with a batch of radios mounted in tricky locations, and the rear accessory port isn't available.

Thanks.

Ya NLA on MOL. I got this one about a year ago I guess before they were NLA. Find someone who had consollettes as thats what you used to program those.

I actually never used one with a consollete. Always used the rear accessory cable as you could perform an autotune with R8000 series service monitors using serial cables.

First time I had to program a consolette I was stumped. I didn't know about the hidden port.

What I found is the W7 isn't exactly a smart head. All it does is sends data to the radio and displays data from the radio.
The head programming resides in the radio and how it interprets the data.
With some cases, the key and display functions revert to defaults, so likely overlooking some other setting.
In the consolette, I made my own programming cable. After programming, I could swap out W7 heads and everything was the same.
With a box full of W7s, it made a good test setup.

Unfortunately, all the consolettes we had at my old job (one job ago) were APX based and used those cables; we had scads of them. I had a W7 cable at another job, but that was two jobs and 15 years ago.

I'll keep digging.
