So after studying for 6 weeks I went in and took my test today. It was a great experience and I passed. The club let me take the General test at no charge but unfortunately I failed it miserably since I hadn't studied for it.

Anyways hopefully I'll have my call sign this week.

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement.

Congrats on passing the technician test. A lot of things you can do on a tech license, CW on a few HF bands, voice, CW and digital on 10 meters and pretty much all modes on 6 meters to the UHF and higher bands. The FM LEO sats are a blast, its possible to make contacts with a 5watt dual band(2meter and 70cm) HT and a rubber duck antenna but its easier with the elk log periodic or arrow2 sat antenna(both handheld).

If you get dissapointed with the local repeater traffic and simplex, the sat work is fun. There are a couple videos on the arrow antena site

Congrats on passing the test! I also took the General test after my tech exam and also failed since I hadn't studied for it. Good luck and have fun!

Congrats and Welcome to Ham Radio !

As a VE, I can tell you that we always encourage those who pass the Tech test at our sessions to try the General, even if they have not studied for it. It gives you a look at "what's next" so you can prepare for it and it costs you nothing to just take a shot at it...once you've passed the Tech level.

Years ago, when I passed the General test, I was encouraged to try the next level even though I was not ready for it. That was the, now defunct, Advanced Test and I only missed passing it by 7 questions.

Guess what? A month later I went back and almost aced that test.

Congrats. Keep studying while you're in that mode and you'll probably knock the General out easily enough.

Welcome to the merry band of RR amateur radio operators. Keep on studying for your general. While a tech, you can even explore cw on hf, a segment of the 10 meter USB, and loads of options on UHF/VHF. If there is a repeater near you that has IRLP capability, give a call to node 4777 (Raritan Valley Radio Club). We welcome operators from all the nation and world for fellowship, technical info, and laughs.
