Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I wanted to let you all know. Mike (@Webodisk ) was a huge contributor of information on here (particularly on VA trunking systems and Unication programming) and will be sorely missed.

****

Virginia Fire Network regrets to announce the passing of our founder, Mike Carden (VFN08). Mike passed away unexpectedly yesterday morning at his home in Virginia Beach.

Mike created VFN in the early 90’s as a notification system for the Tidewater Fire Photographers Association. Using a network of pagers and scanners, he and a handful of friends started what we have today.

Mike served as a firefighter/shock trauma tech with Norfolk Fire-Rescue for over 25 years. After his retirement from NFR, he held several positions in the Virginia Beach School system, most recently as the security officer at Parkway Elementary.

Mike always had a smile and an infectious positive attitude, and was always available to lend a helping hand. He will be sorely missed.

Mike, we have it from here. Thanks for being a friend, a mentor and an all around great guy.

I first met Mike when he was a Norfolk Firefighter and I was a radio technician for the City of Norfolk Radio Maintenance Repair Shop behind NFD Fire Station 10. Mike was at station 7 if I remember right and he also worked at another station near downtown but I forget which one. I also knew Mike from being a volunteer firefighter with the Thalia Fire Station 7 in Virginia Beach, I was a member of Plaza Fire and Rescue and we covered Thaila for rescue squad calls. I ran on several calls with Mike over the years. We were both friends with Rollie Solderhome (spelling) who was an avid scanner, fire, and train buff and he was a member of Thalia FD. Mike was a great guy, and a lifelong friend I have known probably for 40 years now. He was a database administrator for Tidewater and myself being a database administrator for Northeastern NC counties that joined at the state line, we communicated regularly.

Rest in peace Mike. You will be sorely missed.

If anyone hears anything about a funeral for Mike, please let me know. I don't get news from Tidewater. I would like to attend. Thank you.

I am very sorry to hear. I didn't realize that was his username here on RR. I had spoke with him on Facebook through a Unication group, and remembered him from a hazardous materials class we took in the mid '90's. I'm from the "other" side of the state, so small world. He seemed like a real nice guy- and always very helpful. RIP, Mike.

I'd met Mike once. Had several conversations with him over the years.
Always on top of the latest goings on in the scanning world in Virginia and North Carolina.
Just learned this a short time ago on FB.

RIP Mike.

I knew Frank Young. Not sure where from, it's been many years ago. I was a Radio Lab technician for City of Norfolk Police and Fire, a City of Norfolk Dispatcher, and a volunteer firefighter and Rescue Squad member in Virginia Beach and later an Auxiliary Police Officer in Chesapeake.

Regards

Richard

Just received this from a mutual friend of Mike and I-

Mike Carden's Family will hold a Celebration of Life - Saturday June 4th, 2022, from 2PM-4PM, at Lendy's Cafe
1581 General Booth Blvd
Virginia Beach, VA.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out to Mike’s family.

I unfortunately will not be able to attend, as I will be volunteering as a medic for the MS150 bike ride….one of the activities that Mike took the helm of many years ago. He was actually the one who got me involved in it. It won’t be the same without him.
