Ok folks, I need a master at PC kung fu and I need it bad!

IE 6 on my PC has gone stupid!... Ive been keeping up on the updates MS.com and now IE6 wont let me download from a multitude of different web sites like yahoo, shoutcast or WinAmp for upgrades.

I can listen to music feeds and scanners, but if I want to DL the file to set up my own shoutcast I get and error stating that IE6 is unable to open the requested site.

Ive also looked at maybe I have a virus or spyware....None found so far.
Ive looked at what Microsoft has on the issue, done what they recomended and I still am having problems. I even tried to re-install IE. No Luck!

Has anyone else gone though this?

BTW: I'm running Win XP w/ Serv. Pak 2

 HELP!!!

Any help will not be turn down. Even from N_Jay;)

Buck,
Try a few simple things first, which you may have already done. In the IE securty settings make sure cookies are enable. Also check your security settings to make sure they are not to high, sometimes computers for some unknown reason will change settings. Out of curiousity, can you run me through the steps you are taking at shoutcast and I will try and see what happens on my end if I try to duplicate your actions.

Under Tools - internet options - Securty - Settings are set to medium...the funny thing is I cant get it to go lower with out getting an ERROR saying that this is what is recomended and select either mdium or higher.

Under Tools - internet options - Advanced TAB - Security (tic boxes)
I have checked:

Check for publisher certification revocation
check for signature on download programs
Enable intigrated windows authorisation
enabel profile assist
Use SSL 2.0
Warn about invalid site certification
warn if form submital is being redirected

Does this help?

I'm not sure why it is doing this, I looked at mine and I can change settings higher and lower with no problems. I don't know when the last time you downloaded any updates or security patches etc, but if you try a system restore from a time frame prior to when you did any updates, that may fix the problem.

What error is it giving you? Check your Pop Up Blocker(Under Tools) and see if it is allowing the site to show pop ups, sometimes if the dowload window pop up is blocked you may run in to trouble.

on Pop-up blocker Im set to low.

The error Im getting is that IE6 is unable to open the site I requested at this time ( No code given)
I get this at almost every site like macromedia, Yahoo, WinAmp. Now I know sites can get busy from time to time but this has been like this for a few month now.

I did do a system restore when this first occured and that didnt help.
I was just on MS.com and checked for security upgrades and made 1 DL from them, but thats the only site next to reciving e-mail.

I'm really perplexed over this. I was wondering if the new Java would cause a problem? Im only asking because it the last thing I remembered messing with when this all started.

Im plucking straws at this point!

Also, I uninstalled Norton AV from my system thinking this may have been the cause due to some bad setting... Still not any better.

Buck,

Make sure that you are logged on as an "administratrator". If you had it set, by default, to come up as administrator, but somehow it's hiccupped & now got you down as a "guest" or a restricted access user with lesser privliges, then you would not be able to change security settings or download files. Same issue if you use a logon that has expired or you blew by the password prompt..

If none of that applies, then try system restore as in dfndr13's suggestion

The page cannot be displayed

The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. Please try the following:

  • <LI id=instructionsText1>Click the Refresh button, or try again later.
<LI id=instructionsText2>If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.
<LI id=instructionsText3>To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). <LI id=list4>See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
    1. <LI id=instructionText6>Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. <LI id=instructionText7>On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
    2. Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
<LI id=instructionsText5>Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed. <LI id=instructionsText4>If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
  • Click the Back button to try another link.
Is this the error you are getting? If so, I don't think it would be the Java. It is something blocking the Internet connection. Sometimes if your server is slow or they are doing some work, this will happen. A setting may have changed in the connection.

And I also went to shoutcast loaded the page and DL the SC server 5.0

BTW - That wasnt the Error I was getting. It was a rectangular bar that displayed infront of the DL Process box after a few minutes stating that:

Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. the requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

Buck,

You could also try installing Microsoft Antispyware from Microsoft.com. I have used these on many computers and it seems to catch some spyware that sometimes causes these types of problems. If you got any questions just let me know.

I had similar problems after installing McAfee Privacy Service. It certainly made me feel safe & secure because I couldn't connect to the outside world!

Even after uninstalling the product I was unable to get any net access at all. The only thing that worked for me was a System Restore back to before MPS was installed.

Joseph11:
Im not sure what is ment by DNS server( forgive me Im behind on the PC times)
Firefox was even having that issue, As a matter of fact, I was using Fire fox when the problem started. I just figured it was because it was fairly new and there was issues at the time I got my version. So I uninstalled it. Went back to IE6 and the problem was still there.

Much like MarkEagle I started to look at Norton as a problem with my configuration
made lots of changes and finally uninstalled it as well. I began to get MS.com to DL- was starting to show some progress.

Im sure it lies in the reg edit as to how my pc is set. the reason why I think this is because I can not get th e security setting to stay set at Med Low or low. If I knew where to look in the Admin tools I would make the change.
