Can anyone please tell me if DSD+ (Fastlane) favours more CPUs / cores or not?
My current logging / recording machine that is on 24/7 is an old dual core CPU and whenever I leave a scan running (only about 10 freqs that I'm trying to ID) I get terrible audio quality on any recordings...
If I leave FMP24 on one freq it seems to record fine.
I've tried MP3 and WAV but both have the same issue.

I have another old quad core machine (8 threads) that I could possibly free up soon.

Thanks...

I've tested on a 2 core machine and it worked fine for single freq but I had the same situation with the scanning multiple frequencies. Seems like dsdplus favors at least 4 threads with my past experiences through different machines.

It doesn't matter if 1 core or 9 core. Memory and bus speed are the important things.
My older Dell, 2 core AMD, 8 Gb ram, 333 Mhz bus and just loafs running DSD+FL with google earth running along side it. That is scanning 7 frequencies. P25 audio, never was great, NXDN sounds a bit better, live or recording.

Sir's, it is to do with how fast CPU can handle single core process.

Clock speed is dependant on type of CPU. There are different generations of CPU, thus speed.

This is a massive simplification.

Anyhow, enCrypt may have a buggered PC. Dual-cores came out years ago. Hence my line of questioning.

Thanks all.
Its not a "buggered" PC, its just an old one... ;)
I'm an IT guy so I like to re-use / repurpose old (usually free!) kit as much as possible
My question was more if the DSD+ software was multicore compatible as some software is not.

You need to quote more h/w and s/w info for an educated comment.

I am pretty sure DSD+ FL is a single core program. So you need speed. But not that much relatively. Any PC made in the past 10 years should have no trouble.

Looking at things with Process Explorer, DSDPlus does spawn a number of threads, though most of the activity is in one thread. However, there is still a separate FMP24 process to consider, as well as display threads for whatever windows it displays (close what you can), other processes the machine is running for various services, etc. More cores is better, all other things being equal, because there are dozens/hundreds of active processes/threads running. Whether it has anything to do with your audio recording problems, though, is doubtful if the machine is, say, less than 10 years old and wasn't a low-end box designed for web-browsing only. What does Task Manager→Performance→CPU look like?

Good point. If it is sitting at 100%, you have problems!

It sits at around 80% on the CPU most of the time and is a dedicated machine for DSD+ / FMP.
Its a 3Ghz Core 2 Duo E8400, with 4GB RAM (possibly older than 10 years actually!)
No worries, I know it is an old box, I'll try something slightly newer.
As stated my question was more about the multicore support, please close the thread...

Not sure what prices are in other parts of the world, but I recently bought a Core 2 Quad CPU for about $10 USD off of eBay to upgrade my last Core 2 Duo, give it an extra little bit of oomf instead of canning it. Haven't tried anything radio related on it, but I use it for playing old games and media and what not on my TV.

Actually just checking again now and it only runs at around 30 / 35% and rises to 50 / 60% when receiving anything so not as bad as I thought...

You should be paying attention to whether or not FMP24 is firing up its CPU loading thread. On older hardware, you may want to disable that feature.

Thanks Slicer, I've disabled CPU Loading in FMP24 now. I forgot about that setting. Will see how it goes...

Won't settle for anything less than 4 cores these days. My main machine is 8 cores.

4GB RAM is just fine.

ddr2 RAM is twice speed of ddr. ddr3 is twice speed of ddr2 etc, etc.

Type "msconfig" into command line and disable any software that you don't need to start on PC boot. Also, disable any services that you don't need running.

"xp-AntiSpy" is good (albeit really old!) software for disabling things you don't need. Still works with windows 10.
