I'm about to take the plunge on one of these. How handy is the remote head? I'm torn between getting it or using the $100 toward an antenna. I would like to hear from those who have it and those who don't. Is is the PCR model tedious to control without it?

Oh, and I'm assuming the remote is the only difference between the units. Correct?

I plan on getting the AOR SA7000 wideband antenna. It seems like the best alternative as I have a pretty unfriendly homeowners association. Would appreciate any thoughts from someone who has one....antenna that is :)

regards,

I got the ICOM-PCR1500 & the R-2500 and personally i have never used the remote head on the R-2500 due to limitations and functions and i have unplugged, but if ever u put the radio in the car its worth spending the extra money.

Regards Lino.

Attic interference?

Thanks for the input. Greatly appreciated. I'm narrowing things down. Definitely getting the PCR-2500. The AH7000 you mentioned seems like just the ticket. But I have to put it in the attic. At 5.5 ft high for the discone, it should fit, but I have 2 AC blower/furnaces and a water heater up there. Will that create too much interference?

Another question...what are you using for HF antenna if you listen to that?

I have the R-1500 connected to a roof mounted Diamond Discone. Works superb. I have never used the remote head, unfortunately. I guess it comes down to whether you want to control the radio via the mouse or use the remote head function.

I have the R1500 with control head. For about 90% of my listening (audio), I use the control head. It tunes pre-programmed frequencies and gives you push-button scanning.

For working SW, satellite, and any time I venture outside the pre-programmed frequencies I use the radio in PCR1500 mode.

If you're using the radio's PC software, the control head is disabled.

Pics of this radio in my QTH:

(The QTH has been updated since the pics were taken, but you can get an idea of how small the control head is.)

For $100 I think it's well worth it, even if you only use it occasionally.
