My PCR100 is being repaired as I write this. Tech Rep says it got fried either by a near lightning strike or statis from a monitor. I know the steps to take to prevent future problems from near lightning strikes. What I don't understand is how this equipment can be potentially damaged by static from a monitor if its intended use is in conjunction with a PC? I see lots of monitors/TVs in the shack pictures posted elsewhere on this site. There must be thousands of similar setups these days. Has there been a rash of radio equipment zapped by static? At any rate, when I reinstall the PCR100, I will locate a few feet away from my monitor and TV. Are there any other precautions I could take? I have the PCR grounded to a cold water pipe and my monitor is actually LCD but I do have a TV nearby. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Hello,

I would suggest a surge suppressor installed in your RS-232 line. Here are two which could be just the ticket.

I use APC surge suppressors on my phone line (I used to have DSL service), My cable line, and also one in my network cable, all of which are listed here:

In a "Lightning like" event where I used to live, my landlord lost his cable modem, a Hub, an eight port switch, two routers, and several network cards. My system, which was protected by a APC Smart UPS and the 10 Base T network cable surge suppressor, was not damaged. Shortly afterwards, my landlord purchased a surge suppressor for his network cables. (Same as mine except about 12 channels if I remember correctly).
