I've had my RS Pro 197 for 2 yrs and was very pleased from day 1 HOWEVER the past few months the scanner is not picking up all frequencies as b4 and local/strong (conventional) frequencies come in weak while my much older scanners are clear and strong. Indoors I use the supplied telescopic antenna and on the road I use that antenna or a roof mounted one .... same results. While traveling thru areas that are trunked I pick up some traffic but not as much as in prior months. I am current on updates.
Additionally, tonight I noticed when the scanner is 1st turned on, it shows PSR 500 in the display. Shouldn't that be PSR600 or doesn't that make any difference?
I truly enjoy this forum as there is so much knowledge available at a reasonable cost ;-} Thanks

I have one also. Did you make sure your ATT is off in your global settings? That would cause receiver sensitivity to go away. 73, N9zas

Strange that your display would indicate a Psr500 , especially if its a pro197... Unless at some point in its life it was returned to a service center and a main pcb was swapped out with psr500 firmware, but unlikely. You have a oddity there it seems. 73, N9zas

With the programming software you can make the splash screen say whatever you want. One of the first things I did when I got my 197 a couple of years ago was make it say hello to me and identify itself as a Realistic Pro-197 when turned on.

Still perplexed

Continuing... So I determined I DO NOT have the latest firmware update. Several hours later (and trying to get the new update to recognize the 2000546 cable on Com 6), the update won't recognize the cable. I am guessing that the latest Pro 197 update won't recognize the PSR 500 software. While attempting to update the latest V2.1 the windows box shows a ? by current V. (the cable does work when I program the scanner with software. HOPE SOME OF THIS IS MAKING SENSE! Local RS dealer is no help and of course the RS site no longer exists (or at least I am not able to find it). So ...
if someone is willing to provide step by step instruction in layman terms (to get the correct Pro 197 firmware installed), I would greatly appreciate it. I have tried the instructions from "marksscanners". Thanks for any assistance anyone MAY provide!

Well I blew it!

Guess I have a door stop now. Since my last explanation(s), I was able to restore to default V which for some reason is PSR 500. Although I had been able to upload/download, the scanner no longer accepts the upload (even the restore from backup). I can manually enter data. I THOUGHT THE INSTRUCTIONS I READ SAID I COULDN'T LOSE ANYTHING BY GOING BACK TO DEFAULT!

The cpu updates arent connected to the win 500 software other than using the same cable....

It is possible that, during all the antenna swaps, the pin that is connected from the BNC connector to the circuit board has worked itself loose.

. On a pro106 yes that could be a problem, but not likely with a pro197 such as the op is referring to. The Pro197 is a base unit and the Pro106 is a portable version of that. 73, n9zas

I've had three owners of pro106 bring them to me with this issue and to correct the problem, I reflowed the bnc connection to the pcb with flexible copper then used loctite on the mounting hardware to keep it from working loose.:). 73, n9zas

Mine worked itself loose, I don't own a soldering iron, so I managed to move the pin just enough where my VHF and UHF improved dramatically (0-3 bars before to full signal). I am however looking for one to use for parts should the need arise.
