I have read that the AOR AR-DV1 performance on HF isn't great.

Are there any frequencies that are below 30 MHz that the AOR AR-DV1 can hear that anybody would recommend?

It has been many years since I have tuned around much below 30 MHz, so I am trying to reacquaint myself.

HF reception is a factor of many variables. Time of day, propogation, location, sun spot cycles, individual antennas used and more.

I have an Icom R8600 and an Icom 705 sitting in front of me, as well as the ARDV1. All can share the same antenna. At any particular day and time on HF, anything the Icom's receive can be heard on the DV1.

I also have a Malahit SDR. Of all of them that is probably the best mainly because of its amazing Noise Reduction properties, but again if the Malahit can get a signal, so will my DV1. Of course the Malahit will not scan or demodulate digital signals.

The 'S' meter readings vary with each radio, which is more a product of the individual radio's meter circuitry than actual reception. capability.

As far as the DV1 not being capable of good HF reception, that is definitely not true here.

Hello Marlbrook,

which Malahit SDR model do you have exactly? Please tell me the name. I would like to buy one but there are so many and you never know exactly which model is the best.

Many thanks and 73

I am lucky enough to have two. An original DSP2 and a clone 'Malahit DSP SDR V3'. The clone has a gold speaker cover on the left, and 2 SMA antenna connectors above that. Both seem identical to use in most ways.

The AR-DV1 works about as well as the AR-8600 on HF, which is to say - pretty good but not great. A short run of a random wire with the ATT (attenuatorr) enabled or even fully/partially extending the whip can give decent results. Quite a bit to listen to on HF - shortwave broadcasts, maritime, aeronautical, ham, military.

For anything HF, it is all about the antenna. you really nee a good HF antenna for decent performance.
That applies to about any quality receiver.
You may recall that HF propagation changes with time of day, solar activity and other factors.
I have been doing a lot of WeFax and navtext lately with my 84 foot long wire and Kenwood rig.
