permit denial?

A fellow member of my fire department told me tonight that MSP DENIED his scanner permit application because " his age (20) was a threat to MSP troopers in performing their tasks". I have had my permit since I was 19, and was NEVER denied such. I know our station's S.O.P. states that it is legal for a firefighter to have a scanner in the vehicle.

Has anyone else heard of a similar issue?

1) Permits are not needed anymore

2) Did you actually see the denial letter?

The new scanner law goes into effect on May 31, 2006.

Sounds like a misinterpretation to me. The old permit law didn't have provisions for denial except maybe for a previous scanner violation.

Even though they are not needed in Michigan after May 31, ANYONE who travels through states who do not have a permit system and are restrictive, should consider getting one (FREE) while they are still available here. Even though they are NOT HONORED in other states, the meer fact that you have one is PROOF in other jurisdictions that you went through the background check and the MSP found no fault in issuing you one. This could conceivably be a plus while talking with an officer in another state... it has been known to be helpfull in talking your way out of a citation and confiscation. It could also be a collector item some day - get one and save it - you never know...

Does he have any kind of criminal record in his past? I wouldn't think so being a member of your fire department, but you never know.

It removes the need for permits to use a scanner in the car.

Yes, unless you are a ham, cop, or have the permit. Scan back in the MI forum for discussion.
