Person County Viper switch over complete

As of 2/21/18 at 10:00 am the switch over to Viper has happened for Person County.

As stated on another thread Roxboro PD is still using their DMR but it is simulcast on the VIPER talkgroup.

The Fire Departments will still page out on the VHF system (for a while) as will the EMS calls. But when the units respond they will be moving to OPS channels and then therefore you will need a scanner that is VIPER capable. All tact channels are now through the VIPER system also. The soft switch over is complete with all agencies and rural fire departments supposedly 100%. Dispatch style has definitely changed.

Just to help clarify for those that may be new to the digital concept. For someone to receive most of the Roxboro/Person County traffic one needs a digital trunking scanner. A conventional scanner will only pick up the page out of calls. The good news is you don't have to have the most expensive scanners that pick up DMR service. (even though DMR is being used)

Have not posted in years, but I have been a scanner guy since 1975. Living and working in Person Co and Caswell county most of the time.

Another thread suggested the Whistler WS1065. Is there anything out there that can pick up ALL traffic?

Thanks for the links......The TRX-2 looks like a choice that should pick up all most everything Person County has going on. Not sure what the "Viper" system is called in order to nail down if it will pick that up.

The TRX-2 will definitely work for you as will the WS-1065. Both are good units. You might try the Radio Shack near the court house in Roxboro. I know they try to keep units in stock and can program them for you. I imagine since the switch over this week by the county they have been swamped with questions.

I think you received an excellent explanation of VIPER in the other thread.

Mitch, took your advice and went locally here in town. I picked up the TRX-2 today and they programed the local stuff in. So far I'm very well satisfied just in the few hours of listening. I'll play with it when I have more time to see just what all it will do but need to read the manual first. Much more complicated than what I've been use to having. Thanks again for the help.
