My son and his family have been assigned to Taiwan for a major corporation. What personal radio options (including amateur radio) will be available to them in Taiwan?

Not sure about personal communications. I don't think FRS or GMRS are available. In Japan they sell personal radios which I believe operate in the 900MHz range. Saw them in Tokyo but didn't ask about them. The political and security situation is always touchy in Taiwan. Be careful.

Taiwan has a "personal radio service" very much like FRS, in fact, it shares some of the same frequencies.
Since the rules vary from country to country, it's best to purchase the radios you need inside the country, that generally makes sure you get appropriate radios that are legal to use.
