I live in Wilmington (around Talleyville) and was wondering if there are any antennas out there that can pick up 800 mhz better than the RS 800 Mhz ducky? Would a 5db mobile mag mount antenna pick up Philadelphia TRS any better? Philly comes in but not well enough to listen to it. I'm trying to monitor Philadelphia on a PSR-500.
Thanks

You need height.

Gain will make up very little compared to height.

Another thing to consider is that the Philly system is specifically configured for local coverage. Even with a Yagi nice and high, it might be a bit iffy at best.

You're probably better off trying to find a live feed, frankly 73 Mike

I monitor it from Fairfax / Wilmington. 186' ASL, 13dBi yagi on a rotor. LMR400 coax.

A ground plane / omni directional antenna will not get the job done.

With the trees shedding their leaves it is getting better. I'd say that reception is about 80% but note that I only listen to the CW TG's and will switch to the district TG when there is something interesting going on. Trying to scan everything I do end up having fading issues. I get it on any of my uniden digital radios.
Some philly freq's are adjacent to DE TRS freq's and get blown out due to my proximity to the Talleyville yard site which I have to aim thru to get the site near the PHL airport.

Back when I had a car (a few years ago) and my 396, I was occasionally able to pick up Philadelphia along stretches of Naamans Road (Del. 92) between Claymont and Concord Pike (US 202). And this was with a stock standard antenna.

Your mileage may vary, of course...

You are right about that! I used to live just off Naaman's across from the shopping center. Just about the highest point in DE @ 420' ASL. Had a great monitoring radius.
