"We must be able to coordinate with the many nongovernmental, non-municipal ambulances throughout our city. There are 50 companies they deploy about 300 ambulances throughout our city. In the past there was no easy way for fire communications to be in touch with those entities, those organizations in real time.”

Not a bad idea. Revolutionary actually. But I have to ask why? Is there something wrong with the telephones?

Down here in Metro Atlanta, most private ambulance services come up on the County Fire channels to let them know they are responding with FD on a dispatched call. Been doing it for years on our TRS.

Read the article more closely. It's an interoperability channel to allow units in the field to communicate in the event of a major emergency.

Besides, as has been demonstrated time and again, cell phones are the first thing to go during a disaster. Definitely don't want to rely on them.

seems like that may be the most reasonable way to operate, public an private agencies hand in hand..
the winner in the end is the taxpayer/citizen...

I can see Philly going that way, although that short article says not at this point. A lot of Philly residents use EMT's and hospitals as their family doctor. They get a lot of calls..

alot of people use ems as their taxi service to the hospital for all kinds of crap. toothaches, stubbed toes you name it. why call a cab and pay for it when medicaid will. it's a joke. as for interops, any area i have ever worked had some type or regional coordination center. that was for daily emergency calls as well as major emergencys. maybe Philly should look into something similiar.
