I have a new 396 Scanner and I am scanning Phoenix PD but I don't hear anything sometimes and yet I hear them on the VHF Side. Then all of a sudden they start coming thru the scanner like they should, and I haven't moved. Does any body else have this problem. I have no problem with Mesa or Glendale but Phoenix PD comes and goes.

Yea, it happens to me. Since I never listen to the TRS & always listen to the Vhf I'm not exactly sure why. But I think it depends on what simalcast they are using.( A,B,C etc).

I just got a 396 & BCT8. With the 396 Preprogrammed system I get very little. With the BCT8 Preprogrammed I get all kinds of activity.

Hey scott,

3 things to try.

First, use FM, not NFM mode. I know the system is supposed to be NFM but FM works better for what we are trying to do, because this allows us to pull in transmissions that would normally be clipped by NFM mode.

Next make sure you have the right freq's. These are what I use:
PRWN CC A 867.21250 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC A 867.96250 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC B 867.08750 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC B 867.11250 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC B 867.93750 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC B 867.98750 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC C 867.97500 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC C 867.20000 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC D 867.75000 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC D 867.82500 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC D 868.27500 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC D 868.35000 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC E 867.13750 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC E 867.16250 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC E 867.35000 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN CC E 868.07500 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN SKYH IR 868.30000 MOT 0.0 D
PRWN SKYH IR 868.45000 MOT 0.0 D

Make sure you've set up the system as a motorola type 2 trunked system (I don't have a 396, so you'll have to check with your owners manual to see what the steps are) and then program these freq's into it.

Finally, turn the squelch as far down as you can before it opens . If all you intend to monitor is the PRWN system, turn it all the way down.

EDIT: One more thing, where are you located? If you are in Tempe or Mesa for example, you won't hear PPD 24x7 - you'll only hear them when one of them affiliates with the same control channel that you are on.

Hope that helps,
-AZ

AZScanner thanks for your input but that wasn't the problem. In the mornings and afternoons I'm not hearing anything then in the evening the scanner starts hoping. Just yesterday at about 5PM I was listening to them on the digital scanner but they had shut down the VHF crossband TXMT. Then it seemed like 7PM my VHF Radio started going off again. I really am at a loss as to why I can't hear them all the time.

Help-apco25

I am not a novice to Digital scanning and Trunked systems but I am stumped. I have a Pro 96 got it a about a year ago, and have been listening to PHX PD on the analog channels. I recently have tried to program from the guides here and others I have received the scanner to monitor the APCO 25 system in place. I think I did it right, but I get only the airport channels dlearly. Others I sometimes hear...but they sound encrypted or coded. I purchased a 800 antenna to go with it thinking that would help, it has not. I tried taking the scanner around to different areas to see if the reception would be better it was not!

Anyway the other threads I have been reading here seem to suggest others are receiving the channels fine. Anyone have any idea what I have done wrong. Am I missing something? Do I need an update, or should I return this scanner for another one.

Thanks for any input!!!!

I have found that on my 396T, if it's in two modes at once on the scanning, such as close call scan and regular scan, I get only half the volume I get on hold or scan alone. Even if it is on hold and scanning is taking place in the background, the volume is less. I need hands on help programming this thing with trunked frequenciess. Anyone in the Phx area available? Thanks, Al

Weird! Where are you located? As I said, unless the users affiliate with the same CC you are receiving you won't hear them. There may be interference during the day that is limiting your RX as well, in that case there's not much you can do.

As for the VHF patches, I think they are in the process of phasing them out, so eventually they'll drop off and be gone for good.

Hey AZ,

Are all the those frequencies in order say like from the "hot channels 1,2,3", then 4-9. The reason I asked is because I want have all the frequencies in order. I have the pro 96 and have ordered the 9th edition of the Southwest Frequency Directory . In a way I find it very difficult to put this stuff in order, I know how to put in the control channels and then the Talkgroup I.D. numbers but I am lost as to how to put them in order. Say from channel 1-9 in that exact order so that way when I want to listen to a certain channel, I can go to that one. The main area I want to listen to for the PHX PD is A-6 because I live in that area so I like to listen to what is going on, plus listen to the hot channels.

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: If anyone knows a way I can upload them to my scanner in the correct order I can try and do it that way.

Chris

Inland,

PPD does things a bit differently than what you're probably used to. Eventually, the references to channels 1,2, and 3 will go away and be replaced with C Deck 4 thru 9.

The system is designed to work like this:

A-Deck is the precinct dispatch channel
B-Deck is an alternate channel for each precinct
C-Deck is a tactical/emergency traffic channel for each precinct.

With that in mind, here's my list for PPD:

PPD A04 400 02996
PPD B04 400 02980
PPD C04 400 02960

PPD A05 500 02995
PPD B05 500 02979
PPD C05 500 02961

PPD A06 600 02994
PPD B06 600 02978
PPD C06 600 02962

PPD A07 700 02993
PPD B07 700 02977
PPD C07 700 02963

PPD A08 800 02992
PPD B08 800 02976
PPD C08 800 02964

PPD A09 900 02991
PPD B09 900 02975
PPD C09 900 02965

The A channels are A Deck, B is B deck and so on. The system actually contains "decks" A-J, but everything above C is encrypted so I don't have those programmed in.

Hope that clears it up for you a bit...

Actually what I'm not clear on is the reference to the necessity of entering a Conventional Channel in between each "site" supported within the system.

I have done so at each break point (i.e. Site 101, 102, 103 etc...) and do find that additional CC's are now selected for transmissions - but, I have discovered "no" new frequencies. In other words, the same frequencies are displayed in either case - the only difference so far as I can see is the CC selected for the transmission.

If I'm not clear it's because I still reading up on just how these scanners work.

Ah, I gotcha... Well the jury's still out on that. I have all the sites programmed with NO conventional channels inbetween and don't have any trouble with it not checking the other sites for activity. I have quite the opposite problem actually, and have to lock out the sites I don't want to hear. But others here will jump up and down and throw things for even suggesting that the conventional channels in between are not needed.

The short answer is, IMHO, I don't think it matters if they are there or not.
